    Arthur E. Wilde, Jr., 99, died March 27, 2012 at Carol Woods. Prior to moving to Carol Woods in 2000, he lived on Saratoga Trail in Heritage Hills.
    He is survived by daughters, Anita Solomon of Chapel Hill and Medford Leas, NJ, Jeanette Long of Franklin TN; son, Rev. John Wilde of Utica New York; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
    A memorial service will be held May 27, 2012 (Memorial Day weekend) at 2:30 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church.

    Mr. Wilde grew up in Briarcliff Manor, New York, where he built one of the first radios in town and was a ham radio operator, call W2AVS. After graduating from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1934 he worked on early television experiments for RCA in Long Island, NY and served in the Naval Reserves, then with Curtiss Wright in W. Caldwell, NJ. He holds patents that improved the maneuverability of WWII aircraft. In 1966 he founded the Wilde Engineering Service and developed one of the first industrial uses of computers to automate engraving machines.
    He retired to Chapel Hill with wife Christine Waldemar Wilde in 1983. In Chapel Hill he was on the Building Committee of University Presbyterian Church and played the violin as a volunteer at area retirement facilities.
