Why would you waste a CD, DVD, or otherwise on an install? Use a USB thumb drive to install it and you don't spend a dime. Just set the bios to firstboot from the USB. The machine can't tell if it is a DVD, CD, or whatever it only reads 1's and 0's.
BTW, you can replace the old drive with a new one for under $20 if you go to newegg or Tigerdirect. Shipping is probably more than the actual part.
edit:
Must have been posting at the same time as the guy before me (an hour different on the time zones? ) his USB advice is the way to go!

Reason: my mistake
Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made, Were every stalk on earth a quill and every man a scribe by trade. To write the love of God above would drain the oceans dry, nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched from sky to sky.

Hi Robert, All,
The reasons I'm moving over to Linux and eventually dropping WindBlow$ is real simple,
#1. It's FREE! #2. It will do things that M$ won't #3. No Antivirus needed, #4. Data
is secure #5. IF there is a hickup in the distro, you have thousands of users writing
patches to take care of the problem......I have more is you wish, LOL!
Yes, I have a CD 'burner', but it doesn't work. Good ol' Dell. Why don't I download
it off the WEB? Well, I'm a accident waiting to happen. Murphy and I are related, LOL!
If something can go wrong with what I'm attempeting, it will mess up in Spades. (♠)
The distro I'm looking for is Xbuntu 10.10. It's an older version but has what I need in it
to get started. After I become more familiar with it, I'll upgrade to the most stable version.
Like the family photo, but, your uniform should be grey, not blue, LOL!
GOD BLESS,
73,

Download and install download accelerator plus and you should be able to download the ISO no problem..
what the hey, your gonna wipe it all back off anyhoo unless you plan to make it a dual boot system until you get more familiar with linux.
I would go ahead and use the latest version.
since the computer is running you could open the ISO with winrar and run the installation using the dual boot setup option

Hell, I figured that there was always somebody somewhere either trying to

or
Trying to remember what to do with it.

You're not going to hurt anything, at worst you have to start over.
Try the USB method, it is simpler than you think.

Hi All!
Let me explan myself better. #1. I live on a small, disability check so it takes some 'time' to
purchase things, doctor bills and food come first, LOL!
Robert, KD8DEY, nice grey uniform <Salute!> I have some smaller hard drive, an 80 gig but
it has some data on it I don't want to lose. I do plan on getting another hard drive a one terabyte that will go into the NEW computer that I will build. It will have Linux on it exclusively.
I'm starting out with Xbuntu 10.10 on recommedations from a fellow ham and Slackware user.
He said that Xbuntu would be a good start, then I could work my way up and maybe want Debian.
Oh BTW, Yittish for grandmother is Bubbalah, LOL! Close but no cigar.
Paul, G4LNA, the Phillips CD drive I find doesn't work, so I'll have to try and dig one up, but
with this broken leg and being in a wheel chair and the computer stuff is in a shed out back,
it's gonna take some real doing without physical help.
Jeff, KA8NCR, Thanks for the tip about net installation. I wouldn't know where to look for that
directory to put Linux into.
Brian, KG4KGW, 'New Egg" seems to have the lowest price but I may be able to make a better
'deal' locally and no shipping charges.
I'm sick and tired of having to constantly be on guard for malware, and browser grabbers. Now it seems that some of the normal websites one would go to has a hidden porn program that infects your computer. I've been married to the same, gorgeous lady for 40 years and you could not pull me away from her, LOL! She's my best friend, next to JESUS.
I have a lot of things I want to try in Linux that so far Windows hasn't been able to do, so I'm going to see how it acts.
GOD BLESS,

Since you have a 2nd hard drive you can download the iso, then extract it to a folder using winrar onto the second drive.
Then install by running from the folder. just read the prompts and you should be fine.
