Default is a npx-35 battery good?

I have an npx-35 12v 8 ah battery laying around and was thinking of putting it in use in a portable station setup. I'm using an 857d. how much time would one think they would get out of this?

You would have to know the duty cycle, the current draw, and even the condition of the battery. I can tell you, however, 8 Ah isn't very much capacity, especially for a 100 watt radio.

From a few minutes to several hours ... all depending upon how much TX power you are using. Improve the antenna a bit, and turn the TX power down to minimum, and you'll have a few hours to run the rig!
