Default After 244 Years, the End For the Dead Tree Encyclopedia Britannica

A sad day indeed, as one who loves the feel of a book in my hands and my nose a millimeter or so off the page as I read it....
This is a landmark in the end of books.

After 244 Years, the End For the Dead Tree Encyclopedia Britannica

    Rick Zeman writes
"According to the New York Times, it's the end of the road for the printed Encyclopedia Brittanica, saying, '...in recent years, print reference books have been almost completely wiped out by the Internet and its vast spread of resources, particularly Wikipedia, which in 11 years has helped replace the authority of experts with the wisdom of the crowds.' The last print edition will be the 32-volume 2010 edition."

The wisdom of the crowds indeed.....
    Yah Right.

    Thanks Slashdot.org...

Yes the day of door to door salesman pushing Encyclopedia Britannica is long gone. Now I mostly get home alarm salesperson.

    Thankfully, the Website replaces it.

I like the touch and feel of paper and hard-bound covers. It is sad.

The 1911 edition, Vol XXVI, of Encyclopedia Brittanica is available for free for the Nook.

    I know... NOT the same.

I'm surprised they hanged(sic) in there so long.

WIKI is cheaper (I donated) and takes up a LOT less shelf space. And it is amazingly current.

Hell, I figured that there was always somebody somewhere either trying to

Sad, though I'm kind of partial to the World Book Encyclopedia.

This really sucks because it has always been one of my dreams to own a set but now that will never happen.
