And in other news... I gave Uncle Sam three more years today
I reenlisted today for three more years. This enlistment will bring me up to the twenty year mark and retirement from the Tennessee Army National Guard in 2015. I have been a military technician since October 2001 and I have deployed to northern Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division in 2005. My plans for the future are teaching part-time at Trevecca in the Fall and then possibly full-time come the Spring semester.
My oldest son wants to enlist soon after his seventeenth birthday later this year.
So YEA!! me.

Thank you for your service sir---you are a warrior, what Col. Dave Grossman calls a sheepdog...one of a fraction of 1%
There are sheep. There are wolves who prey on the sheep. There are sheepdogs who protect the sheep from the wolves. God protect those of us who are sheepdogs.

I couldn't stand to spend my whole life taking orders from "superiors." I'd rather just be dead. But hey, whatever works for you.

I worked in television and radio for years prior to going to work full-time for the National Guard and I have more freedom to practice my craft than I ever did working in the civilian sector. I do not have to prove myself when there is a management change, because I wear my "resume" on my uniform. I am closer to many of my fellow soldiers than I am some members of my family. My coworkers donated hundreds of hours of vacation time to me when my wife died, so I could sort out my new life without her. My college education -- to include a masters degree -- was paid for by the military. My home -- purchased with a VA loan -- will be paid off in eight years.
It's not perfect, but it sure ain't bad!

That's great if you like it but I just couldn't do it.

Then I hope you're self employed.
As long as you are drawing a salary from someone else, you are "taking orders from superiors".
The only differance is the type of work and the nature of the "order".

Congrats and thank you for your service. My dad retired from the Indiana National Guard about ten years ago...he made it about 30 years before they made him retire. It was a great job for him. My son is a Marine, and just left the Corps after 8 years of service, he earned his college degree while in the Marines and also served a year in Iraq. He says being a Marine is one of the best things he's ever done.
