DCS (digital coded squelch) is used quite commonly with cross band repeaters. Both my Kenwood mobile and my Yaesu HT have that feature. You get like 10,000 combinations to choose from.

Forgot to ask if these guys are reliable? Some Chinese distributors are flakey when it comes to shipping, I used Paypal so if they stiff me I can always file a dispute but I hope I don't have to. I got a confirmation of payment but the tracking number for Hong Kong post is bogus. Looks like I will need to contact them and I will let everyone here know how reliable they are.

I got mine from the 409 shop. They sent a HK track number, that showed it came in thru NYC.
Seems mid US is just half-way around from HK, don't know what determines which coast they use.
Took 15 days. Once it entered the USPS system all tracking is lost.

Actually Pat the boats arent all that slow.. They can go almost 30mph.. Problem is, they dont just go betwseen Hong Kong and LA. I was on a ship that
made the far east run.. I took aboput 6 weeks for a voyage. If your radio gets on during the outbound part.. It could take as long as 4 weeks just to
make it to long beach. Then It has to clear customs and make to to the warehouse. I would guess that 5 weeks would be a good guess. Unless they
come by air. As far as I know, there are no "express" ships that travel just to and from Hong Kong.. Good luck..

Everything I have gotten from HK has come by air. I don't know how they can sell a $1, ship by air, and pay their expenses. I can't ship across town for a buck.

I don't blame you for wanting to switch. I was just thinking that if they do send you the UV-3R+ and you returned it unopened, why wouldn't they allow the switch? I like the looks of the UV-5R and the keypad is a huge plus. They wouldn't be out anything unless their concern is shipping costs, but you could front that. I suppose the answer is always no until you ask. Good luck man!

I buy a lot of RC stuff from HK vendors and you're right, it all comes into New York by air. Since I live in Virginia it usually gets here in two days once it clears customs. I just wonder why they put a goofy tracking number on my account? I guess I will have to wait till tomorrow to find out and if they still haven't fixed it I'll send an email but I think should give them two days to fill the order before I ping.

Just checked out the specs on the UV-5R. Output on VHF is 4W and UHF is 1W. The VHF output is a little low but would still work for closeby repeaters. I really wonder if the 440 would even work at 1W?? You may need to be extra close to that repeater.

That has baffled me for years--i buy a pack of LED's from China for 1.25 free shipping and it gets here in 5-6 days...how do they make any money on that??

MY life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather i will skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming...
    WOW... What a Ride!
