Default CS - a new signal reporting system

A title search for signal or reporting didn't show this.

Interesting article in February's QST magazine op-ed where the author, Bruce Prior, N7RR, outline his recommendation for a new system.

So 5/9, which he feels is incomplete, would be P9X

    Perfect
    Level 9
    eXcellent quality

PAX where A would mean 10db over S-9 (I wonder how long it would for passenger jokes to creep up lol)

4/8 would be something like G8C perhaps.
Good copy but short of perfect
    Level 8
Chirp or tail on make and/or break

    Very interdasting

A couple problems with this. One is that almost nobody will want to use it because they won't be used to it.

The other is that it's not really needed anyway. Most signal reports given any more are just rote placeholders and totally meaningless.

The exceptions might be some casual QSOs still use signal reports as actual signal reports, but in those cases it's easier to just say "Good strong signal, Bob. I read you just fine."

I will have to read that when I get some chance to see his full justification. My initial though is that what we have works fine.

Can't see it catching on.The one we have is straightforward and simple....and on rare occasions when it is used in a meaningful manner it is as accurate as needs be.

Incidentally , not so very long ago I actually had to give a guy a 494 report.

I use numeric reports only on CW, and that's because it's much shorter than sending, "Yeah, I hear you really great here" or whatever.

On phone, I never use a numeric report unless someone, for some reason, insists I give them one. I don't know why people do that. For me, on phone, it's just "I hear you great" or "Geesh, I can barely copy you" or whatever.

P9X? Nah............How about a P5CW or P5DX? Any kind of signal report by them would be OK with me!!!

The next P5 operation might be during the occupation right after the war...

Well, shoot. I'll have to make up another conversion chart and hang it next to my Cycles Per Second to Hertz chart.

Every so often someone thinks of a new way of evaluating the strength of a transmission but its something which isn't required. If hams around the world were having discussions such as ' It's about time somebody found a way of having a scale of signal strengths its really a big problem', but they aren't. Its far too complicated and the one we've all been using for donks is quite satisfactory
