Default Whatever happened to 2N2222 “contest”?

While back, OK , way, way back, there was a “contest” to design a transceiver using only 2N2222 transistors. It seems that there was only one entry and it was later offered as a kit by Nor Cal.
I just found a tape of SMT 2N2222 transistors and may want to put them in use building a simple CW transceiver for 10 meters.
I was wandering if anybody actually build and used any of the Nor Cal 2N2222 based kits and could share their experience here.
I found similar project on the web, using a different transistor.

I'm thinking of a similar project, but using only 304TLs.

Wayne Burdick, N6KR, from Elecraft, posed a challenge to design a transceiver that used no more than 22each of 2N2222 transistors.

There are imitations like K8IQY’s 2N2 series of transceivers but they use some other components than 2N2222. Beautiful construction - http://www.k8iqy.com/qrprigs/2n240/2n2pix2.html

This may be a Yahoo group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NorCal_2n2/messages

It might be a challenge but personally using just 2N2222's would be too limiting.

Maybe we should start a 2N3907 contest. Those are way cheaper and easier to find.

There was in the last year I believe a 555 timer chip contest. Amazing for a chip that is older then many of people on this forum. They published the winning ideas.

I think everything possible using a 2n2222 was published!

Depending on the application, much better devices readily available if you are buying devices. Have to think if it is worth your time to use a 2n2222 for say the RF front end device or get something better. Ft is like 300MHz.

Maybe I am misunderstanding your post Leroy, but an Ft of 300MHZ is not an issue at HF. There are much lower noise devices available but again at HF it almost doesn't matter since the ambient noise is pretty high anyway. If I was going to homebrew a rig for performance I would not be using 2N222's in the RF circuits. The 2N222 and 2N2219 are still some of the best GP devices around for small signal amps, oscillators, and switching circuits.

    I like that idea Tom.
    Maybe we could exchange ideas.......
I was thinking of building a legal limit amplifier with a bunch of 12AT7s in parallel.
But first I want to build a regenerative receiver with a single 6146.

Actually Tom gave me an idea......

We could have Freak-tronix project contest.
Thinks like receivers that use completely inappropriate parts.
or an AM QRP transmitter using a 555 as the exciter.
