    Post Hawaii for WAS

Still looking for someone in Hawaii to work for my last state for satellite WAS. From EN41 either AO7 or FO29 would have to be used to make contact.

While FO29 is operation it might be the better choice as it is quite a bit easier to work at low elevations and it in my opinion is easier to work portable. If anyone could help that would be great!

You'll probably want to post this request on the AMSAT-BB and other forums, as there are very few satellite operators in Hawaii that work SSB. Otherwise, the only options are to hope for someone to take a trip over there with satellite gear, or hope for a higher-orbit FM bird (something like HO-68 that was working in 2010) that we can get Robert NH7WN to work.

Its been posted to the AMSAT-BB. I know some over there probably has the equipment but just doesn't get on the birds.

If anyone is going to Hawaii let me know!

There are a few. The last one I worked in SSB over there was NH6VB in 2010, but Peter said family issues were keeping him off the radio. He occasionally posts on the -BB. Otherwise you'd have to go through the -BB archives to find a few others who had been active in SSB on the birds.

Other than NH6VB, the only non-FM satellite QSO I had with Hawaii was when Adrian AA5UK went there in March 2010. Adrian lives in Chicago, and took a vacation where he had his satellite gear and helped stations as far east as Georgia get their satellite WAS.

If anyone is going to Hawaii let me know!
Since a long trip like I did last year to Australia is not possible in 2012 (not enough vacation time), I have thought about a trip to Hawaii. I've never been there, and I'd make a trip with radio gear. I know of a non-stop flight from here in Phoenix to Honolulu, and from there I could hop to other islands. If I do something that, I'll post in the usual places.

This may be your lucky day.... Late last night, Robert NH7WN posted on the AMSAT-BB list that he is now starting to work SSB satellites. If he is able to either overcome those local surroundings that seem to limit his activity, or make plans to operate away from where he has those limitations, he should be able to work you in Iowa.

Robert didn't elaborate on the equipment he is using for SSB. I've e-mailed him to ask about that, and hopefully he will either reply to me or post to the -BB that information. It would be nice if he could pop up and work those who are looking for Hawaii via satellite.

I hope to work Robert, but I have little hope. He had made a comment that he had to overcome a 20 degree elevation deficiency due to obstructions.... He commented that he might make it as far as Nebraska. I'd almost need someone on the far east side of the big island to make my QTH.

    It's not that bleak, Clayton.

Robert may have to take a road trip away from Honolulu, but he wouldn't have to be on the big island necessarily. In 2010, Adrian AA5UK worked from Kauai (northwest of Honolulu and the island of Oahu) and had QSOs with stations as far east as northern Georgia and Cleveland. Texas was in range of Honolulu when we had HO-68 in 2010, and that's in an orbit lower than AO-7. If he has a clearer shot to the east and northeast on Oahu, Texas should be in range for him. It may take a little bit for him to gain proficiency in SSB operating, and especially from a portable setup, but he has been on the FM birds a long time. If he's doing what he says, I'd have hopes he could work you from wherever you happened to be in Texas.

Otherwise, you and Wyatt can start passing the hat for my Phoenix-Honolulu round-trip ticket, and maybe work KH6/WD9EWK sometime. If/when I ever go to Hawaii, I'd make sure to be in places that could work the mainland - no matter what island(s) I visit.

Robert sent me his 6-digit grid square and alas, there is but a *glimmer* of hope. We have a little more play than I had originally calculated. We can basically have a 10-13 degree on his side and 1-5 on mine, best case scenario. Unfortunately he said he needs 20. I wonder if that limit can be pushed. I know that here, based on topo, it looks like I need more than a couple of degrees to work a bird. But in reality, I can work many birds down to LOS... Maybe I was a little pessimistic earlier!

My wife and I plan on going to Hawaii, but probably not for at least a year, just waiting for the kids to be more travel friendly. I plan on bringing a pair of 857's to do linear birds.

Maybe you could go with one 857 as the transmitter and an 817 as the receiver, to cut down a little on the radio baggage for a trip like that. On the other hand, two 857s would be good redundancy if you lost the final transistors in one 857 but it could still receive, then swap the radios around and transmit off the second 857.

Too bad we can't get a satellite just a little higher in orbit, where the footprint would cover up to New England. I'd think Hawaii is the only state you can't work from Massachusetts - right?
