Default Sorry to whoever I ran over

So I was scanning the low end of 20 meters a few minutes ago and heard some DX (a LZ1). I listened for a minute and waited for a few calls so I could catch the callsign. When I found my opening, I jumped in and made the contact.

But halfway through the exchange, somebody jumped in during the DX's reply and told me the frequency was in use.

Understanding that YES, the frequency WAS in use, I fired back with a, "I know, and I'm working him".

But it started bothering me, so I rolled on back and heard an EXTREMELY faint QSO happening off the back of the beam (domestic). It was so weak I completely missed it and assumed the only station on the frequency was the DX.

I ran over their QSO. I HATE when that happens to me and I strive to make sure I'm not doing it, but I didn't strive hard enough today.

I could not make out any callsigns as it was very weak, but if the OM who I was rude to happens to read this, I sincerely apologize. It took me 5 minutes to realize what I had done.

    So, 73 and again, sorry.

Stuff happens and you didn't intentionally do it. I've had it happen, listen for several minutes but here nothing then wham there's somebody there. Just the nature of radio waves at times I suppose.

    Brad,

Don't beat yourself up. That's life on 20 meters. You can often hear only half of a QSO. The other stations probably couldn't hear the LZ. Usually, domestic stations will move away from a "DX" frequency.

This happens all the time. No big deal.

There you go throwing that big beam around again. It's time to take it away from you and give you a G5RV until you learn how to handle it.

It happens all the time on PSK. I look at the screen and see about half a dozen traces, I put out a call on a clear space then someone else appears so I stop. It may be a locator square I need so I wait until they finish and when they do, suddenly I find two other different contacts on the same frequency ! Its been like this for years because of the poor propagation, it works both ways.

I'm pretty sure you didn't even have to post this and make a public apology. Woe is ham radio.

Thanks all. I don't beat myself up too much. But I really do strive to be a courteous operator.

With great antenna and amplifier comes great responsibility.
