I'm told SouthCars reported today that two hams in the Dallas area are in critical condition in the ICU after the field day antenna they were using came in contact with HV lines. The reported calls are AD5IP and KE5CO. Prayers to the families.

    Fatal mistakes to be avoided

Sometimes it's easy to get careless, and unfortunately, in this case, the end result was devastating. This isn't a risky hobby, provided that common sense prevails. Falling off a tower, or getting electrocuted are easily prevented. My prayers go out to their families.

Wow, I hate to hear stories like this. It's an important reminder, though, that whenever HV lines are nearby one should exercise EXTREME caution. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families, as well as the other hams who may have been with them. I'm sure they too will be dealing with a lot of emotions.

In those long ago days when I used to coordinate a rather large field day operation we had a separate crew (fresh) assigned to take down antennas. Those who operated most of the event were often too tired to safely remove antennas, generators, etc. so having a fresh crew was intended to facilitate safety.

As sad as it is to hear news like this it is part of the dangers of dealing with towers and such.

My prayers go out to both individuals that they make a speedy and full recovery.

    For what; a contest

Two silent keys, for what; a contest! Have to ask why the antenna was placed that close to power lines. Thoughts and prayers go to those left behind. All that sorrow for a stupid contest. Sorry I don't understand…

NOT SK! If you read the on-line article is said they were stable when transported.

And Field Day is not a contest, though many treat it as such.

It's an opportunity for clubs to exercise their ability to work in the field, when necessary, for their community.

Not to mention, usually an excellent picnic weekend.

My thoughts and prayers go out for a speedy recovery to both.

    Bob, K8RC
