    Default CM-50 Amplifiers ???

OK, so I figure only people who know what a CM-50 is will read this, which probably means other FAA people.

Here's the question. When we finish scrapping all the CM-200 equipment (Nexcom changeout) and all the CM-50's and -51's go to the surplus market, will we be able to make decent ham amps for HF/VHF/UHF out of them? I just stacked 16 up in a storeroom at one of my VOR sites, and I had to just look at 'em and wonder, "What if ..."

For one thing, what if you fed 100 watts into the input rather than the usual 10?

I'm also aching to open one up someday. Even though we have the TI's, I still think they're squirrels in there.
If Air Traffic can break it, I can fix it ... well ... sometimes

The Motorola CM-50/CM-51 are linear amplifiers.
Specifically, the Motorola CM-51 is a 50 Watt UHF Linear Power Amplifier
It may be possible, but I have not read a How To article on the Internet.

    These were a solid-state PA, weren't they ?

You would need to install an attenuator -- unless you rework / modify this unit.
The CM-51 is ONLY a 50 watt output amplifier ... so using a 100 watt radio to drive it does not make much sense.

Photo of the Motorola CM-200 VHF unit -- attached.
These units are currently listed on eBay for ~ $ 3,000 USD.
