What a hammer. Sounds like QLF to me. Kidding -- that's what I call a couple of ace fists on straight keys.

Fellow in the picture was sending European style, I believe. We were always taught to keep our forearm on the table, and put thumb and middle finger on sides of knob, with index finger applying pressure to the top of the knob. He was doing it all WRONG ! ! !
But boy, what a fist! Thanks for showing us that video !
I'm rusty, and couldn't concentrate on what he was sending, but I sure did recognize the smooth rhythm of his sending.
Besides, there is a mockingbird right outside my door right now, and I am being distracted. How's THAT for an excuse ?
Ham Radio, Amateur Astronomy, and Model Airplanes - what better way to spend some time!
No time is ever wasted that is spent LEARNING something !

Agreed, that was fine straight key sending even if the posture & style was unorthodox - sort of relaxed European. Was anyone able to identify the straight key he was using? It wasn't a J-44 like he claimed (you did copy that, right?); it had a totally different frame & lever, as well as a navy knob distinctly different from the knobs used for the various J-37 assemblies. The key to the right in this pic is a "stock" J-44:

In fact, it is the same J-44 that I've been using since about 1958. My avatar (at the moment) is a J-37 with custom turned knob & a custom base made from Sumac.
The gizmo on the left in the picture, the first paddle that I ever owned, is a Hi-Mound HK-706 that happens to be for sale if anyone is interested. There are also books in the picture, exactly the sort that are often recommended to new members of the hobby. Not for sale.

Careful not to make old People mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off.

Very observant !! The "key" videoed is a "Chinese military key". I use a J-44 (and others) at home, but for some reason took this one on the mini-expedition to P.C. Beach. Spur of the moment prevarication, (I chose to say J-44 Instead of "Chinese Military Key" for brevity purposes !! LORD, I'm sorry about that...

Ha! I saw you cast your eyes heavenward as you did it, Steve, so it's OK then! I told the XYL that looked sort of like a Chinese military key, but I wasn't certain enough to make the call. It takes a bit more ooomph to pound one of those than a J-44, eh?
"Ham since 61" says there's a small mystery behind your first call, "K9IJQ". I got "KN9ZMD" in mid-1960 when the calls were being issued in sequence. Tell the story?
