 Carpet quandry
So, my friend has a house next door to his own that he rents out.
The previous renters were pigs. Stupid pigs at that, I met them.
They had dogs and let them ruin the carpet. After repeated efforts, and professional cleaning, the stains are still visible and a faint smell lingers on.
The new renters our friends of ours. Well, son and girlfriend of a friend of ours. The girlfriend is 'hypersensitive' to certain odors and can't stand the smell.
The longer it takes to make the house livable, the more money my friend loses. So, the decision was made to tear out the carpet and put new in.
Now, here is the problem. My friend (house owner) is married and his wife has wanted new carpet in their own house for years. It does need replacement. Last night I was there helping out and got the 'over my dead body' talk about the carpet from the wife when my friend was out of ear shot.
I'll bet as soon as that carpet truck shows up there will be fur flyin'.
Now, if it were up to me, my friend or the son, we would just tolerate the stains, air the house out for a week and call it good. But now they have to deal with two women, one hypersensitve and another that is jealous and angry.
This ought to be good.

How about a compromise.
Get new carpet for the wife And replace the smelly rental carpet with the one removed for the new carpet.

You haven't seen the carpet the wife wants replaced. It likely wouldn't stand up to removal.

An ozone generator --with the level of ozone adjusted to match the level of odors coming from that carpet-- will kill the odor.

...yep, ozone works..had several placed in our house after a living room fire...smell gone in five days

I used to repair cars that had interior fires. We used a product that had chlorine dioxide in it and it was remarkable.
I'll bet if I recommended an efficient and proven form of odor control and dying the carpet to obfuscate the stains, my suggestion would fall on deaf ears.
They think the pad under the carpet is ruined as well. That could very well be.

I don't know how many of you have actually ripped up old carpet. After a few years it's usually gross, disgusting, loaded with microbes, dust mites, mold, fungus...god knows what. I refuse to have wall-to-wall carpet in my house becuase it's impossible to really, effectively clean it. Area rugs do the job and are a lot cheaper and easier to replace, and they don't trap filth nearly as well. 73
