Default Johnson Viking Ranger and Halicrafter S-40B

I just bought a Johnson Viking Ranger and a Halicrafters S-40B from the widow of a silent key. I thought they would make for a cool restoration project to keep me busy for a while.

Is there any way to date either of these?

    Thanks

The Hallicrafters S-40B came out in 1950 and was replaced by the S-85 in 1954.

The original Johnson Ranger (now usually referred to as the "Ranger I") came out in 1954 and was replaced by the Ranger II in 1961. The original Ranger transmitters did not have the keying circuit which is on a a shelf mounted on the front panel above the main chassis. There was a modification kit offered by Johnson to add this circuit to those transmitters that did not have the kit.

If the tube sockets are held in place by rivets, then the transmitter came from the factory assembled. If the tube sockets are held in place by machine screws, then the transmitter was built from a kit. The Ranger was available both factory built and in kit form.

Thanks, looks like mine was a kit.It looks like it was put together well.

On the back of the case there is a relay attached. The relay switches back and forth between two antenna connections. The relay is hooked up to the two sockets near the power cord. Is this relay there two switch the antenna between the transmitter and the receiver?

As you can tell, I really have no idea how these older rigs work. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

One more question, the manual says that the osc meter should read between 20 and 34 ma. There are three scales on the meter, which scale should I be looking at?

    Thanks
