Default Naval Antennas & Radar. ( Bit of fun quiz )

I was in London yesterday on a job and had an hour to kill before my train back home. I am a photographer by profession so here is a pic of HMS Belfast. ( now a museum )

This ship at one time did have a ham radio station installed. ( don't know if it still has.)

The second image is a crop of the 1st one in the areas of the antennas and radar.

I have designated them with letters so who can surmise which one does what.?

In particular there are 4 black topped domes adjacent to the AAA and the secondary 4 inch armament. ( marked J ) What are these. Some kind of fire control for each.?

If anyone should be interested here is a brief history of this ship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Belfast_(C35)

B has got to be gun laying/director for the main armament - just because its on the optical director and thats the logical place!

Something similar to the USN's Phalanx system?

The Phalanx has a Vulcan gun, I believe.

He dont look very HAPPY to me.? .......... I would rather have Mr. Phalanx as a friend and not an enemy. Unless that is a picture of Mrs. Phalanx.!!!!! ( that would explain much. )

Doubtful... Belfast was decomissioned long before the advent of Phalanx or similar systems. It's more likely they are tubs for a single or double 20mm Oerlikon cannon. These were widely used as anti-aircraft weapons during WWII and after. I know they were still in service when I joined the Navy in 1965..

I think H is the "Huff-Duff" or HF direction finder, used for triangulating on U-boat report signals.

Thank you for that picture. Ships make worthy photographic objects because, as Conrad said, "Nothing can deface the beauty of a ship." As a ham, I say, nothing can deface the beauty of such an antenna farm. Had I the money, I'd have such a mast, array and assortment.

Her signal flags show, on the inner halyard C35; on the outer, GGCN--which, I assume, is her HM naval call sign. C35 may be a fleet signal, I suppose, but I'm neither British nor tar to understand it.

If you have to worry about the cost of HF e-mail, you can't afford the boat.
