Default Replacing tubes on Yaesu FL-2100B

    Hi there,

I recently got this rig and found that it could use a replacement of tubes. The output right now is about 250W across the bands.

I read reports about certain tubes (the Svetlana 572B) producing a certain oscillation that would break the capacitor bank from the unit

So does this mean I should go for a matched pair of Taylor's 572B units from RFParts.com? Should I consider other tweaks?

    Thanks in advance and 73,

    Martin -

OK, you found an HF amplifier.
Next step -- RESEARCH and READING.

Another common failure, High Input SWR.

As far as 572B tubes, RF Parts sells both types (Chinese and Russian mfg.).
I would select based on the criteria: warranty and price !

Yaesu HF Amplifier - FoxTango web page
Read her commentary about used FT-2100 purchases, and the common areas requiring
VISUAL inspection and/or testing (e.g. burnt, damaged components).

Carol Maher at FoxTango has the manuals that you can download !
FoxTango uses Taylor tubes in their restorations and rebuilds,
since the original Centrons used by Yaesu are no longer manufactured.

Repair parts can be purchased from RF Parts, Mouser, DigiKey and
other US electronics distributors/retailers (NOT Radio Shack).

I'd do a lot of diagnostics before investing in new tubes.

The FL-2100 series are very flaky in many ways, and I've had to repair a number of them over the years. The Heath SB-200 is a better design.

Sadly, many FL2100B's were used by freeband cb'ers as an AM linear . . . a great way to fry any linear designed for SSB/CW only.

Years ago, I remembered one of those ops ordering a new set of tubes every two or three weeks. I tried to explain to him NOT to use it as an AM linear, but . . . he had more dollars than sense.
