Default So glad I quit smoking.

I used to smoke but I quit a long time ago. My body just couldn't take it anymore. Anyway, I was behind some lady at the store the other day and she had $30 worth of groceries. She added a carton of smokes and the bill jumped to over $90!!!! Damn! How can people afford to smoke anymore? Holy crap.

I know I smoked when I was in my early 20's then when I was in Iraq during the war. Quit when I came back in 04 and havent smoked since. I know what your talking about in the price. They are $45 a carton here.... no wonder why all the soldiers go around bumming them off of each other and like one or two will buy a pack or 2 daily. Very expensive, cost more than gas.

    Smoking is good for you.

I heard our President (Obama) quit last year, let's see if that's really true (I have no idea).

    Many men smoke, but Fumanchu.

I smoked on and off from age 25 or so...went for physicals and chest X-rays every year, lungs always clear. Doctor always asked, "Do you really smoke?" and I'd say, "Yes, I really do." "Unbelievable," she'd say. You don't have any lung damage.

    Genetics help.

But I really did quit, anyway. Not so much for the cost but for the smell. My XYL and kids couldn't stand it.

Before I smoked I didn't mind the smoke (grew up with it in the house) but as an ex-smoker I can smell a cigarette a mile away and it is horrible.

I quit 11 yrs ago. I still smoke a Cobija or Monte Cristo on special occasions when visiting across the river, I like the taste. I used to get 3 to 4 horrible colds a year after I quit I've had 4 colds in 11 years - good investment.

I mainly smoked pipes and cigars and have always found cigarrette smoke to smell bad but a quality cigar smells sweet.

I quit sixteen years ago this April, it was the fifth time I quit.
I'm glad I quit when they were $1.50 a pack, the store around the corner is now selling my former brand for $5.50 a pack.

I agree how can anybody afford them now.

    Bill;
When my dad quit it was after the doc told him he had emphysema.
That was in 1982, he lived until 2008 with it.

In Canada the cigarettes can cost up to $10 with tax. Canada has weird cigarette packs -- the standard American 20 cigs to a pack or 25 cigs to a pack. Why? Can some of the native Canadians help me on this one?

Quit eight years or so -- smoked in high school and college. I knew something was wrong when I accelerated from nothing to one pack in less than a year. I really took to nicotine. I still want a cig often. Staying away can still be tough, especially when things get stressful at work. A good number of my friends/coworkers smoke. They've often offered me one (just one, y'know). I'm strong. I haven't given in to the tempters. I still drink up to five cups of coffee a day, but I'm working on getting that down to one or two.

Unlike other ex-smokers I don't care if people smoke in front of me in a room or other enclosed space. There's so much smog in city air that I figure a bit of cig smoke every once in a while won't hurt me. However parents that smoke in front of their kids kinda make me angry. Then again, so many of us here grew up in a home where at least one person smoked. When I was a tot my Grandma would smoke right in front of us. I like to think that those were more innocent days. Thirty to forty years ago people knew that active smoking is lethal. However, I don't think that many people knew that inhaling secondhand smoke is just as bad as puffing a cig.
