Why? What is the point? The Forum software provides all the tools you need to post on it. It is counter productive to require the use of other software to make a post. Forum software should be sufficient. All the practice does is provide a band-aid for poor Forum Software and Management.
Using word processing software was a good idea for chronic mis-spellers before browsers started checking our spelling for us.

Did you read the first post Steve? Because the point is there, the forum chucks you out after a period of time when you are trying to compose a long message, hence the reason for using a separate application. Apart from that I agree with you, all the tools are there to be used, no good if it chucks you out though.

And that is why I said "All the practice does is provide a band-aid for poor Forum Software and Management." The software seems good.......that leaves the management of the software. Perhaps somebody overlooked something?

I tend to be too long-winded, anyway.
If I lose a big, long diatribe in the way described by the OP, I just start over and the second try is almost always both shorter and better.
The first time or two it happened I was discombooberated, but after a few go-rounds I learned to take it as a hint that I am getting too long-winded for a forum.
I put in several hours every day writing and editing page after page of the crappy fiction that I write, so a page or two more or less on QRZed means very little to me.
Easy come - easy go.
GIGO, etc..

Or, when you're done typing your post, hit Shift + Home, then press CTRL + C to copy the entire post into your clip board. If the forums eat it, just place your cursor and press CTRL + V, job done.

I don't think it's "poor Forum Software and Management" at all. The administrators are just protecting themselves from endless sessions that may be left open that will take up system resources that the owners have to pay for. they are protecting themselves from people who start to write a post and walk away leaving the session open forever. This is good system management and it is a good trait for the software to allow the administrators to put in this limit. However, some people like the OP and other people who might type slowly will see a problem. This can be overcome by the end user using the "band-aid" of typing their post into notepad or equivalent then doing a copy/paste into the forum.

Sometimes this happens, and I get really irked my post evaporated....
But of the few times its happened, I can actually finish the second post faster because I've already hashed out the topic. I can usually remember what I'd typed enough to treat it like a second draft, making it a better post.
But it's still very, very annoying!

The OPERA browser saves what you typed and submitted, all you need to do is hit the back button and copy and paste to a new window to resubmit. Nice feature that I stumbled upon due to situations like this.

So does Firefox.

I agree as I do the same thing and just for this reason. It is not only this website but also my own site that runs this exact same version of software. Maybe it's a VBulletin thing or something.
