Recommended Mode and Plan of Attack
I was approached by one of the student organizations on campus asking about high altitude balloons. I began looking at the many different designs available and it has left be confused. I have very little experience with digital modes so I am asking advice. I believe we will be using 2m but it depends upon what equipment we can get donated for the project.
APRS seems to be what I am looking for except I have two questions. I understand that APRS can send telemetry in it's packets, is this a recommended method? Second, can the system also receive commands from the ground station? Specifically to activate balloon cut down, but other functions may come up as the design progresses.
I am familiar with HF, but my VHF+ experience is limited. I am also familiar with the Arduino platform and AVR's in general if that helps. The ultimate goal is a reusable platform for experimentation in near space.
