I drove 50 miles to take the General exam but it was canceled
I drove about 50 miles to take the General exam tonight but when I got there it was canceled. One VE showed up and 4 other people showed up to take a test. But it seems the club got kicked out of the Emergency Management office space they were using.
So I'm going to drive to another town Saturday morning in an attempt to take the exam. And if that one should be canceled there is one in a different town on Monday evening.
I'll get my General license one way or the other. Then I'll start studying for Extra.

Dang, that sucks. Good luck with the test, and finding an exam to take!

Sorry , that sucks. Just a reminder to all who might read it , though , it always pays to preregister , and to confirm a day or two before the exam session , in case there's any surprises like this . It shouldn't happen , but it can .

Wow, not good. You should try for the Extra exam after you pass your General next time! I remember last winter driving 70 miles in a snowstorm to take my General, 4 VE's showed up, I was the only one testing. Sure glad I passed!

Why, back when I took my exam, I had to walk 5 miles, uphill, through a driving snowstorm, both ways! to take it!
Well, no, not exactly. But in those days, the exam sessions were only conducted locally a couple of times a year, and the dates for those sessions were a matter of public record. If you lived in a big city with a permanent F.C.C. field office, things were a little better, but if you lived in an outlying town, you either made the trip to the big city or made sure you showed up on a given date. Otherwise, you were just plain out of luck!

I took all my tests at the FCC office in NYC. I lived in NJ only about 25 miles from there, and it wasn't difficult to catch a bus to a train to get in and out (I was pre-driving age). The office was open 9AM to 5PM Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays.
That was all easy. The hard part was writing on single-sheet paper on tablet armchairs that were installed during the Spanish American War (or maybe earlier) and had so many ruts and gouges in them the paper would come out like Swiss Cheese.

Swiss-cheese tablet armchairs?
Sounds like they were the "holy grail" of a slew of hams outta NYC!

Is the national telephone service installed in your town yet ? If it is, give 'em a call on the blower to check.
