My girlfriend has been trying to get me to get a cell phone for the past couple months. She uses the excuse that there are some times she wants to get ahold of me and doesn't know how to reach me if I am not at work. Okay, I can see that. Now on the other hand I've been trying to get her to go down and get her tech ticket. I tell her that if she's out and about and I can't reach her on her cell (she forgets it at home a lot) I could still reach her on the radio. Not to mention when the cell sites are out I can still reach. We've butted heads on this several times. I really don't care to have a cell phone. I've had one before and once I got my ticket I gave it up.
On Saturday my girlfriend informed me that she ordered me a cell phone and it would be in by next weekend. Now, should I now go order her a nice, new, expensive HT? Or maybe even a dual-band mobile installed in her Saturn?
Guys and gal (especially gals) does this sound more like a way for me to get my point across or just a way to quickly get into the dog house?

Accept the cell phone graciously. It will allow you to talk to her in private, which is something you can't do on ham radio. Don't force ham radio on her. If she doesn't want to be a ham, why coerce her to become one? Set a good example and let things take their course.

Using a cell phone and using the Internet does not make you less of a ham. I use all three. The cell phone is best for quick, private communications. Ham radio is best for long ragchews, experimenting, public service, and having fun. The Internet is best for research, IM, online ordering, and email. They can and do coexist.

Dude, don't push the issue. If she has the interest for Amateur Radio, then nurture it. If you push the issue, then it's going to drive a wedge between you and your YL. You may have to bite the bullet and get a cell phone. A pre-paid phone may be an option because its going to limit your usage.

In any relationship there has to be a reasonable amount of give and take. Ideally you're looking for an almost even match between what you give to the relationship and what you get out of it. Same goes for your partner. But *never* keep score! At that point it will be a "tit for tat" affair and introduce needless tension into the relationship.

Otherwise, if you press the issue, you'll be back on the dating scene faster than you can say your call sign.

Amen to that.

Everything has its place. Your HT has its place, and so does a cell phone.

I've lost track of the number of occasions where I have my cell phone on my belt on my left side and my HT on the right. (Admittedly the cell gets used more often these days, since the repeaters in central NJ aren't quite as interesting as in a college town.)

As to getting her an HT - Sounds like a good idea. She bought you something, you should buy her something.

Figures she has a Saturn. Saturns are the ultimate "Chick Car."

But I digress.....

Dood, what's the deal with her figuring she needs to get you on the horn RIGHT NOW? Danger, danger! RED ALERT! Hey, but that's none of mybusiness... heh...

Hell, get a cell phone. I can't believe you don't already have one. Forget about using 2 meters to stay in touch. Unless you use Tone Squelch, she'll have to listen to all the other ninnies on the repeater while waiting for YOUR call. Who needs that?

When you sign up for your cell phone service, make sure you get good add-ons like Caller ID, speed dial, and Nag Waiting <tm>. HAW!!!

Out.

I agree with Steve on one point & disagree on another.

A woman who absolutely must know where you are, what you're doing, and with whom is one who is destined to make your life miserable. Way too possessive!

If you feel you must accept the cell phone, feign stupidity. Constantly forget to turn it on, charge the battery, check the voice mail, etc.

Oh, and she ordered the phone, so the monthly bill is her responsibility, not yours!

Dude, either way, you're going to land in the dog house -- take the phone and let her pay the bill.

I think it boils down to economics. Which is more expensive? Cell phone? Ham Radio? Girl friend? I say dump the winner.

I would say dump the YL, if she is so intent on running your life now ,think what it will be later. Tell her to give the cell phone to the next guy she tries to make a wimp out of .
