How to practice Morse Code off air?

Is there a computer program that lets you connect a straight key to your PC and let you simulate sending Morse Code? And said program would send you Morse Code to copy? Does such a setup exist?

Many of the better logging programs have practice features built in (most use the keyboard though). There are many free software programs that allow you to practice as much and often as your time allows. I use to use an old discarded mouse to practice on. <(cheap and free)

Well before you get to the time when you think you need to get "pounding the brass" make certain you can read and decode the dots and dashes properly. I bet somewhere on the internet somebody is selling a practice key, do a Google.

I am learning the code myself as the interest has rekindled for me, too. I'm currently using Learn CW Online (www.lcwo.net) for getting the basics down again. Specifically, I like the Morse Machine feature there for getting the letters burned into my little grey cells.

For pounding, I am using an Ameco key I picked up some years ago. It is pretty basic but I plug it into the rig and turn off the break-in facility and play along with LCWO to try to match the dot/dash ratios. There is also a program I use on my iPhone called, Dah Dit, where I can practice my pounding out letters and it identifies them. It also will play back letters and the other characters, too. There's a word feature that will have you read entire words, too. Frankly, it is ok for a newbie but not that fast in recognition so speed improvements will be limited.

Thanks, K4RKY, for the HRD suggestion, I'll try that one for sure as it is my digital mode system. I didn't even think to check there!

    Cheers and 73s,

AI4QR posts daily podcasts ranging from 5 WPM to 30 WPM daily on iTunes.

    Makes for great headcopy practice.

He has been diligent about having a new 3 to 5 minute cast every day of the week and I for one appreciate his efforts.

Don't have an Ipod, is there a way to get mp3s instead?

Have a look at my program - can run any operating system, Windows, Linux and Mac OS - powered by Adobe Flash Player (it is desirable to use version 10 and above) to assess the result can be on this page http://morse.ua4.ru (By the way SWF movie can work independently - without the Internet)
While this is only a test version - in the plans is to add all the possible options for training receive morse code.

I will be glad to hear your comments and suggestions.
