    Question All-thread... :-(

    Hi!

I'm wanting to do some antenna experimentation and building, mostly mobile work. I have looked in every hardware shop, the big stores (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc) and I can't seem to find any 3/8thsX24 All-thread in any length. I'd like to get some 12 inch long rods, if I could. Anyone know where I might find some? I can find 3/8thsX16X12" all day long, but they won't fit into the antenna bases.

    Thanks in advance,
    Respectfully submitted,
    73,

    Don/KA5LQJ

3/8-24 is considered fine thread and typically isn't carried in hardware stores except in standard-length bolts. However, McMaster-Carr probably has some available online with reasonable shipping.

If there is a Fastenal store local to you, check there. They can order stuff that they don't have in stock, and you won't pay shipping. They cater to industry, so you won't find them in strip malls, they're usually in industrial areas - check their web site www.fastenal.com

Otherwise, as KF5FEI suggested, McMaster-Carr at www.mcmaster.com - they have everything.

Try Tri-State Fasteners there in Shreveport, they should carry in stock.

You may also try an independently owned auto parts store. Napa Car Quest etc. not one of the chains like Pep Boys or O'Reilly's

If you were close by, I would make what you need. Piece of cake, even stainless steel. Fined a hobby machinist and see if they will make a few pieces for you. Put an ad in Craids list wanted to find a home shop machinist in your area.

As another option you could buy the tap and some 3/8ths rod and cut to length and thread the ends yourself.

I needed a threaded piece of this once - I ended up buying a bolt and cutting off the non-threaded parts, cleaning up the end with a file and it worked pretty well, but I'd hate to have to make a dozen of 'em!

Grainger.com might also have it, although I think you need a business name to buy from them.

Grainger has lots of retail outlet sites, or did have. Anyone can go in there and buy. Just can't get a credit account without references.
