Just moved to the Phoenix area in Arizona and was wondering if there were any Hamfests coming up?

    Quartzfest Frequencies

Hi all, this year at Quartzfest we'll be operating Special Event Station N7Q from midnight Jan 22nd through Midnight Jan 29th. Primary HF Frequency will be between 3.968 and 3.972. You will probably find some of us on other bands as well. 2 meter FM Simplex will be 146.550 and you'll find lot's of us transmitting the Quartzfest location on APRS.

Camping is absolutely FREE on BLM land and you can stay in your space for up to 2 weeks. We'll be Boondocking in the desert..no hooks up for water, electric or sewer. Most of us use solar panels to keep our batteries charged but some use generators (please be courteous to your neighbors and respect quiet hours please). You can fill your RV with fresh water in town for just $3.00. Once set up, if we run low on fresh water, we take our 5 - 7 gallon water jugs to town and fill them for 5 cents per gallon. Back at our RV's we use inexpensive pumps to transfer the fresh water from the jugs to our tanks. If your holding tanks end up full before you're ready to leave, trucks capable of pumping out your holding tanks (for a small fee) come through our area frequently.

To get to Quartzfest, take US95 south of Quartzsite about 8 miles to La Paz Valley Rd (about 1/2 mile south of the 99 mile marker where the road widens with a right turn lane). Turn right on La Paz Valley Rd and make an IMMEDIATE right turn on the dirt road (only 50 - 100 FEET from US95). You'll immediately see a wooden "Bureau of Land Management" (BLM) information sign and a few yards further north you'll pass a "Road Runner" sign..continue north..you're on the right road. Go past the Camp Host's site (don't stop there to sign in..do that at our Quartzfest* sign in/information table) and continue north about 1/4 mile. You can't miss all the antennas.

As mentioned in a previous post, we're planning seminars and events on a bunch of topics this year. We'll have lots of information about solar and batteries for you RV, Amateur Television, establishing an IRLP/Echolink node from your RV, easy RV antennas, antenna shootout, geocaching, hidden transmitter hunt, off road trip, our Famous "Hobo Stew". This year we've also scheduled a 2 1/2 day "Get on the Air Workshop" where we'll teach basic soldering, selecting coax and installing connectors, calculating antenna length for HF, VHF and UHF dipoles, how to use antenna analyzers to tune your antenna to resonance, a 2 hour HANDS ON session to build your own antenna and a 2 1/2 hour session to put your antenna in the air and use an antenna analyzer to tune your antenna.

The ladies (YL's or XYL's) are included at Quartzfest* too. We'll have activities and classes (non-HAM related) including beading, genealogy, Quilting ideas, and more.

What would a week long campout be without daily campfires, stories, pot luck dinners, etc? We're gonna have 'em all!

Our week of seminars and activities will be topped off by the first ever...."1st annual QRZ(.com) Users Fest" hosted by Fred Lloyd AA7BQ, FOUNDER of QRZ.com. This "Users Fest" will be the largest gathering of QRZ.com users that's ever taken place. Fred will be telling us how QRZ.com began, where they are today and what's in the pipeline. If you're here, you're a QRZ user...and are invited and encouraged to attend. Heck, even non QRZ users are welcome.

For more information, schedule of events, updates, pictures, coordinates to put in your GPS (to find us), and much more...visit our website www.quartzfest.org

We hope to see all of you in less than 4 weeks at Quartzfest* 2011.
