Default Anything else I should do for computer security?

I have one of the McAfee security suite products on my computers (XP, Win-7 starter) that has the firewall, and antivirus and antimalware products. I also use run windows defender on the XP's and Malwarebytes on all 3. I'm careful where I surf.

Anthing else I could do easily to enhance security or am I OK with this?

For XP, you might want to look at Microsoft Windows Steady State. It has a feature called disk proctection which discards changes made since last power on.

    Default Hardware Firewalls

A hardware firewall is far, far better than the software on a PC and not all that expensive. I have one postioned between the ADSL modem and my home network. The PC's on the network also have software firewalls for a second layer of protection.

The WiFi unit also has a firewall between it and the network.

OK this won't stop a really good hacker but it will stop the script kiddies and perhaps deter everybody else.

The only way you will ever be truely protected is if you never plug it in

Download AVG free. For personal use there is no charge and AVG consistently gets top ratings.

AVG is starting to get a little on the bloated side, and they seem to REALLY be pushing their other paid products like mad. While they'll still give you AVG Free, they're starting to be very pushy re: paid products.

MS Security Essentials is better than AVG, and also free. But funny enough, both of those are still better than McAfee or Norton!

If you have a router for your internet, then I'd say DUMP the firewall software on your computer. Unneeded redundancy that will only slow you down.

I know a fellow ham who has a relay that cuts his phone line at will. Since his internet is DSL, this also cuts his internet. Sometimes, he just wants to play a game of solitare on the computer, so he leaves his internet disconnected. There's no better way to stop internet nasties than to not even be on it!

I would run Fire Fox and keep it patched up to date.

Only if you are sure it contains a firewall, else you will be wide open to everything!

I use to have AVG Free and Online Armour. Just until Monday. Over the weekend I got three viruses and they are the same as I have had before. I dumped both programs and now have Windows Essentials.
