Pakistan flood disaster update
Pakistan flood disaster update
The Pakistan Amateur Radio Society (PARS) reports that emergency communications support for ham radio amateurs have been extended in the past week to three more villages.
PARS emergency communications organiser Asad Marwat AP2AUM said food and non-food items have been provided to around 1,000 families in the Charsadda and Nowshera areas.
He said that a medical camp was also established which treated almost 700 patients mainly suffering from Skin and Gastro diseases.
The United Nations estimates 20 million have been affected across Pakistan by the flood disaster and 1600 lives lost.
Asad AP2AUM said that the area is not covered under the 2-metre repeater footprint so communications have been restriction to simplex operation within the group.
He said that about 30 hams are providing help to those who have fled the flooded areas.
Additionally hand-held radios and cross band repeaters and antennas have been offered from Turkey. Once they arrive, said Asad AP2AUM, the relief operation can be successfully expanded into Inner Punjab Province.
PARS continues working in collaboration with Islamabad Jeep Club members with their 4WD sport utility vehicles delivering essential relief supplies, with medical help being provided by the Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians.

Pakistan Floods/Crisis Camp Silicon Valley
We need your technical assistance in developing the following Amateur Radio to Internet interface project.
"Develop technology to allow HAM radio generated information to be directly posted to Twitter, Facebook, or as an RSS feed to output information in a flexible data format (e.g., 'Tweak the Tweet' model) to provide digital machine-parsable information for direct input into information dissemination tools, such as Ushahidi and Sahana maps, Facebook posts and other tools under development."
See the Ham to Digital project home to find out where you fit in to this project.

Radio Relay to Packet Gateway
Tonite at Crisis Camp Silicon Valley we had a brief discussion regarding the amateur radio relay network currently deployed in the affected flood regions. The main recommendation the group will be making is to use packet radio gateways in order to get relayed traffic forwarded to pakreport.org and other services.

IRESC Pakistan Press Release
IRESC PRESS RELEASE
August 31, 2010
Dear Media Organization or whom it may concern:
I Salvatore C. Torres wish to inform the Media Organization of the International Radio Emergency Support Coalition present emergency activities:
The Government of Pakistan agency known as the "PTA "(Pakistan Telecommunications Authority) has officially recognized the “International Radio Emergency Support Coalition” (IRESC) and the Pakistan Amateur Radio Society known as PARS for the Pakistan Flood Relief.
Both Organizations are major ham operators in the world performing emergency ECOMM and other search and rescue operations presently in Pakistan.
In the PTA letter it states that IRESC and PARS are working together through the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
That IRESC be issued a “: Non Objection Certificate “to perform their operations. This is an honor for IRESC and it is rare for the PTA to issue such a certificate to a ham organization. It does recognize that ham operators play a vital role in emergencies.
We take pride and honor in performing our skills and duties as “Amateur Operators” for IRESC and try to set the example and high standards for the amateur community.
The Pakistan IRESC operations are in part because of ham operators like the below stated:
