New EchoLink'er - via iPad
I just got an iPad a couple of weeks ago (I know... what took so long?) and I was looking for apps when I remembered there was one for the iPod Touch / iPhone. I have had an iPod Touch for a few years but never loaded the EchoLink app since you need an external mic for it to work (in voice mode anyway). Since the iPad does have a built-in microphone, I thought, "What the heck?" and downloaded it (after registering).
There was literally ZERO setup. I started the app and logged on and it immediately found a proxy and I had my first QSO within 2 minutes -- when someone called me! The other op (who was in the UK) played back my audio and it sounded great!
I wonder if there will now be a DXCC award on EchoLink for contacts made on an iPad ???I only have 99 more to go!

Why do you have to 'put your two cents in'... but it's only a 'penny for your thoughts'?
Where's that extra penny going to?

No DXCC, but cruising the DX repeaters beats some of the websites I visit.
EchoLink, IRLP and DSTAR - adding interest to repeaters worldwide 24X7

All I know is, if they institute a DXCC award for Echolink contacts, then they should also have one for cell phones, skype and even regular old snail mail.

I highly doubt that there will ever be an Echolink DXCC award but I will admit that Echolink is useful. I lived in south florida for a year and a half and had no way to have any kind of antenna. I used Echolink to keep in touch with my friend back here in NJ and an HT to use local repeaters. A lot of people have negative things to say about Echolink but when it is your only choice you will see how useful it can be.

I doubt that there will be an award for ANYHING as long as VoIP is somehow involved. The Internet Is NOT Radio gang (You all know who you are) is making sure of that
Heck, you're lucky if you get credit for a JOTA contact while using Ham Radio & VoIP!!!
Sorry but that's JMO.....

Didn't I see you on the Nebraska Conference server about a week ago? I know I saw someone linked up with us, and it said that the user was using an Ipod Touch.

That must have been someone else. I do have an iPod Touch, but I don't have EchoLink installed on it at this time. In order to use EchoLink on an iPod Touch, you need microphone/headset combo, but the iPad has a built-in mic.

Ok, well I thought I'd ask. When you get things running come check us out.

I have had EchoLink installed on my iPad for some time now and have already made a number of contacts.

No DXCC but there's a good group on DoDropIn and a good net there on Monday night at 8 p.m. Central time.
The only trouble I see with the IPAD/IPhone is that folks can not link to me. I have to read their mind that they want to talk to me so I can connect to them.
