    Default In class tonight

Well, tonight was final exams for the semester, so after the written exam I had my "lsds" align radios of their choice that they brought in (For extra credit, of course!). One was a Drake SPR4 that needed nothing but a good spritzing of all the contacts. Another was an Ft101, that needed some neutralization and the bias re-kadjusted. Then we discussed next semsester's project, building a direct conversion spectrum analyzer.

After class was out one of the lads started piddling with the newly installed SX-25, and immiediately ran across a boat anchor net on 7205. He concluded that the rig could only receive really old guys. I concurred. I had him tune around and see if he could get Tokyo Rose. We couldn't find her, but Radio Moscow and Radio Beijing roared in like it was the Cold War. Anyway we got to really demonstrate the notch filter on that puppy, and lad #2 said it was far better than any DSP processor he'd ever used....not bad for a 70 year old radio!

We're going to keep HARES on the air all summer, though I'm not going to be teaching a summer class. Listen for us! 7030 QRP in the evenings, as well as 10 meter A.M. when the band is alive. And anywhere else a band might be open. Our callsign is KL7EX.

By the way, I demonstrated a two-tone SSB test without a two-tone generator. I had two students WHISTLE into the mike, but slightly off pitch. Did a BEAUTIFUL job on the scope.

I think this needs to be in the ARRL handbook.

    Hello Eric,

I need Alaska for my "relaxed" WAS (no contest or state QSO party QSOs allowed....my own personal challenge) so I will look for you guys on 7030KHz!

You-Tube videos of your classes would be very cool!

I made it to Dayton and I "lobbied" the CQ staff for publication of the "OPUS"!! OK I hope??

Thanks for the lobby! Was Dick Ross there? What did he say?

The Drake SPR-4 was my first encounter with a Wadley synthesizer. This design while in some implementations is flawed due to too many compromises, is an elegant way obtaining wide, low drift frequency coverage.
I currently own a Yaesu FRG-7, a receiver that has a considerable cult following.

This could be the SX-88 phenomenon all over again. It's not a great receiver, the design is a Kluge and there were thousands made. In spite of that a Frog will command at least it's selling price if it is, unmodified, and in good condition with no battery compartment corrosion. These things command a good price on Ebay.

My Frog was a gift for helping someone fix an old Icom.
