Free Bronx Cheers and other diagnostics
Now that we have a lot of propagation, there is a new interest in shortwave radio and all the oddball things you hear out there. To the uninitiated, these clicks and chirps and Bronx Cheers may seem to be little more than minor annoyances....or mysteries. With a little background info, though, these mystery signals can be of GREAT benefit in predicting propagation, finding good paths, and just learning a whole lot! The fact of the matter is that this is all good FREE information. A lot of agencies put a lot of money into generating this "interference." To an English speaking American, Romanian may sound like noise...but once you know the language, you say, Aha!
Every ham NEEDS to know how to read an iononsonde, for instance. It will tell you FAR more than solar numbers ever will. You also need to know all the wonderful information that's EMBEDDED in WWV's signal. It isn't just random tones and ticks.....EVERY aspect of WWV's signal has great significance. You can find out all about it at the NIST website. There's a lot more to it than just the time in Colorado!
So, next time you tune around and hear an "intruder"...dont' be quick to judge. Think of it as FREE scientific data.

I see your RST and raise you a Pfffffffffffffffft!

If you have to worry about the cost of HF e-mail, you can't afford the boat.
CW: The mode that accomplishes the most with the least circuitry, the least spectrum, and the least power.

It's nice to have all that WWV,H,B stuff in one place.
Thanks for passing that along.
The Below 22KHZ site is a real good one.

They generally sweep between about 2 and 8 MHz.

That NIST PDF is great. I had not seen that before.
There sure must be some very smart people at NIST.
Maybe that is why my application was turned down.
And I had such GREAT references!!

When I was on Kauai 4 years ago, I didn't have enough time for a tour of WWVH. But I use a picture I shot of the antenna farm from about a mile offshore as my wallpaper.
[Sorry, I couldn't get the picture to post.]
