Default HP will not scan but prints fine.

I have a HP photosmart C4180 all In One printer – Scanner. It prints just fine. But it will not scan. The light bar does not light nor does it make a pass. It just sits there. The little flop up screen says it is scanning but nothing happens. I have re installed the software and it says everything is fine. But it won’t scan. Any ideas?

I have two hard drives one has XP the other Windows 7 64 bit.

Try this info from the HP site:

Might apply to Windows 7 too.

At work we have found that if you don't load HP USB printer drivers with admin privies, and before you ever plug the device into the computer, some or all of the functionality of the device won't be installed.

Talking Try the Paint program from Accessories, Programs

Try the following: From the Start Menu ( flag logo in left lower corner ), pick All Programs, Accessories, and Paint. Once the program is open, click on the File menu in the upper left corner. The choice of "from scanner or camera" then becomes obvious. HP posted this to users of the Printer-Scanner-Copier model 1610 who had registered their product on the company website and maintained the same e-mail address for their database. You could then send a small donation to QRZ for bringing this message to you, after I stored it for you on the system. You are welcome. 73 de KB0MNM- Jon

    Bingo.

Many people still make this mistake. They're so anxious to get the printer working that they connect it first, and then install the software.

USB devices should ALWAYS be done in reverse.

    1. Install software
    2. Connect when prompted to (or after software install is done)

You will need to update the driver for your USB.

Or... to make this even easier... uninstall your printer; disconnect your printer; reboot Windows; then do it the right way as above.

HP provides both a single device installation package and they also have a "blanket" installation package which provides the installation for all of their accessories including printers, webcams, digital cameras, etc. I learned in a hurry just to download the entire package and be done with it.

Their "blanket" package also recognizes a lot of the other accessories made by others as well as HP products. I have HP 4200 series and HP 4400 series printers/scanners and those installed without any problems using the "blanket" package.

Thumbs up Scan through the Software

The scan function on HP All-In-One copiers is strange. Sometimes it works from the copier button, but many times you have to start the scan from the software only. I would remove the software and re-install it.
