What would be the suggested or favorite mic for the Yaesu FT897D.
    Thank you!

There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

I purchased a Yaesu MD-100 desk mic but was not impressed with it at all. I got better reprots with the standard mic than with the desk mic, so I went back to the OEM mic.

    Default 857D microphone

I have a 857D. I'm sure the results will be the same for both rigs. I've received very good reports using the stock microphone. However, I recently bought a Heil Pro Set Plus headset. I recommend the Heil unless, of course, you're mobile.

+1 for the Yaesu MD-100A8X microphone. I use it daily, with good reports and have never looked back.

When I had my FT-857D, the stock mic worked very well. I tried 3 Heil Mics and the stock mic sounded better.

I tried a cheap computer mic (you know, long neck, sets on the desk, cost $1) and a foot switch. Everybody says it sounded great, better then anything else I had used, and could not believe it was a cheap computer mic.

I still use this mic on my TS-480SAT. I recently purchased a Yamaha CM500 headset after looking at some reviews. Amazing! Everybody loves it. I wish I had an opportunity to use this headset on my FT-857D.

When I was setting up the cheap computer mic, somebody recorded it and sent it to me via email. If I can find these files, I'll post them here.

    Talking 857D and stock mic

I was all excited to recieve my brand new 857D and ATAS 120a. Got it all hooked up in my vehicle and tried it out. Initial reports were that the audio seemed to be low in volume and clipping on voice peeks. Fortunately the ham I worked was able to record my transmission and rebroadcast it for me to sample. I hated it. Thinking that RF could be a prime suspect I dealt with that issue and did a lot of google research on poor tx audio and ft-857. There is lots of info out there. I modded my mic by adding 3 small holes in the front. That helped raise the mic sensitivity and crispness. But more importantly I read up on the hidden menu features. It took some research but you will find lots on this subject for the ft-897, 857 and 817 radios. Tweaking those and monitoring their effects took several days but eventually I got it set up real nice. I worked that same ham a week later and he played back another recording. Ah much better! and just in time for the past contest. It must be good everyone said FIVE NINE some of them even wanted me to repeat my call and number 10 times just to listen to it
