Hi everyone hope some one out there can help me .
when i switch on computer running windows xp pro
i get two options to load it
both say on the startup screen
select the operating system
then displayed is
m/soft windows xp pro
and underneath
m/soft windows xp pro
as there is nothing in the second one at all, i need to remove it from the start up.

Graham .
it could be a number of things like an old partition or a parchel install/set up
one way or the other, you need to edit the boot loader and delete the old or unused path. but you need to find out witch one is what first.
EG goto the start menu, find the C prompt or in the search box type in cmd
then type in the following (only if you know what you are doing):
bcdedit help
make sure you know witch one is the working path and witch one is not, with that said, and please note,,
editing the wrong path will stop the pc from booting to windows.
73 good luck i am sure someone here will offer more advice but good luck.

The easiest way is to just disable the menu. It's been a while since I've had to do this, but this should do the trick. I've attached a numbered screenshot to follow along with:
Open Control Panel (Start->Control Panel)
If it's not already, switch to classic view. In the picture I'm already in classic view, which is why it says category view.
Open the System control panel
Go to the Advanced tab
Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. This will open the Startup and Recovery dialog
Uncheck "Time to display list of operating systems" checkbox

This is a Vista or W7 tool not an XP tool.
