    Harlan,

I entered "Overland, KS" in the QRZ database search box and came up with over 450 "hits" and several pages listing hams in Overland, KS.. With all due respect, you are way over your head trying to operate your 820.. Before you damage it - if you haven't already - contact some of the following hams in your area and see if you can get someone to personally assist you..

I cannot imagine a problem that would cause the bias to change as you switch bands, let alone QSY within a band.

I second the above advice, you really need to get a experienced operator to help you.

I also agree. Numerous hams, including myself, have suggested he seek help from local experienced hams yet it appears he has not done that. He continues to create new post containing statements that more often than not, make no sense!

    KLH,

I have used the Kenwood TS-599 twins back in the day. The TS-820 uses a pair of 6146's and should have IP current of about 60mA for most of the bands; however, 10M can be lower. While I'm not sure of your setup, you should be turning the rig in cw mode with some sort of dummy load. The ALC is not a good indicator of xmit activity. If you have a manual, follow the instructions for tuning up the rig using CW mode going from low power to full power into the load. Once that's done, switch over to USB and then check for some ALC meter movement. If you don't have the 820 manual, you can find one on the web somewhere. The TS-820 is a good rig as are all the rigs of that age and with some due care and attention it will serve you for years to come.

    Absolutly not!

The frequency has ZERO to do with the bias.

Again wrong, the ALC is the BEST indicator of transmitter drive (or overdrive)

    Possible excessive carrier on SSB..
Our friend needs an Elmer in his aria to sit down with him and walk him through the operating procedure and give the radio the once over.

That post was on the first half of my first cup of coffee even.

It amazes me that it's coherent.
The TS-820 is still fresh in my mind having overhauled my 820 last year. I have to dig into it again. The WWV position quit working, I think it's just PLL alignment.
I have a new project on it's way so I am not eager to dig into 820 just yet. I picked up a project R-599 and I am waiting with baited breath for it's arrival.
    More on that later......

    Rege,

I used a friend's TS-820 too many years ago. It did suffer on 10M as I recall. But, as you say, frequency has nothing to do with bias. As for ALC, I don't and wouldn't recommend it to indicate xmtr drive.

Nevertheless, my advise remains: get and follow the manual. And, as others have mentioned, contact another local ham.

    Ken
