All his service does is add a certain degree of "difficulty" through monitoring and proxy services on your behalf. They monitor your credit reports for any new activity, and confirm the same with you. They also act on your behalf to limit the number of credit offers and other risks--and help you through the process if your cards or credit is used by someone else.

Certain identification cards and documents have gotten a little more difficult to get--but interestingly enough the information that is available on a credit report is sufficient to move through all of the security obstacles. Case in point.

I recently moved, and needed a copy of my birth certificate. The original made by Gutenberg was lost eons ago--and I have no idea where my copy of 20 years ago is. VitalCheck runs the service for copies in many states--and the security questions they ask concern old phone numbers and towns/streets you have held. Multiple choice answers. All of it is available in less than 10 minutes on the computer, and half of it for free.

In short, for less than $100 I can have a new social security card, birth certificate, any college transcripts of earned credits, a ham license if the person holds one--and parley these into a voter registration card, library card, driver license, etcetera.

Driver licenses are getting more difficult, as in many states your photo is held in a database where it can be used again or for emerging facial recognition technologies. But to get enough info to sodomize your credit is still not difficult.

For a while, soldiers in Vietnam put their SSAN's (as Service Numbers) on the outside of letters mailed home to verify FREE postage.

One can find names and SSANs written inside hats and belts, too, at military surplus stores

Similarly, quite a few states have used SSAN's as driver license numbers, and this quite often was printed on checks.

Now, if LifeLock were to reimburse those who pay for protection for costs associated with its failure, THAT would be news!

Just for the heck of it, I did an Internet search on my own SS # and found this:

Can anyone tell me what I should do next?

I believe you stumbled upon a page of coded information for spy networks. Yeah, that's it.

It could be worse than that.

I remember when law enforcement asked people to engrave their social security number on their valuables. Many local agencies even loaned engravers for that purpose. I still run into stuff at thrift stores with SSN on them. That was not a good idea.
