The vets around here recommend that you don't let your cat outside. They get diseases, run over, shot, or eaten by coyotes. We have two cats. One just lost her eyesight but still seems to get around OK. We have no idea how old she is, she was rescued from a school portable building. I'm not sure she will be catching any mice in the future. The other cat still does. Funny thing is that since I put the electrical wiring in conduit the mice haven't been around. They loved to chew on NM cable, always on the neutral side.

Just remember: "dogs have masters, cats have staff!"

Our cat used to play this game at night. We would be sleeping on a hot summer night with our feet hanging over the end of the bed. The big MEOW would sneak in our bedroom, and POUNCE on our feet, sinking his claws into the flesh!!!! Talk about a TERRIBLE way to wake up!!! And he would sleep under the bed. If my wife or I would let our hand move off the bed top, we would get Scratched! Devil Cat!

Most of the animals in the shelter are "worthy companions". It's stupid people that dump them there because they don't know how to handle a pet..... :-(

There is someone who knows cats, they can also be taught by the alpha Tom in the group. I've had the chance to watch this several times, it's quite interesting.

When I was a kid, we were always being brought "something" by our 2 cats. (mother and daughter)
Usually it was half a snake, half a bird, half a mouse....

The brains HAVE to be tasty, as that's ALL they would EVER eat.

We'd get some live stuff now and then, but mostly...just halvsies of something. ;-)

I had an old Tom who use bring me treats, I knew better than to throw them away in front of him for fear he would download something in my house slippers........

One day a friend was over for a social visit.
He came to the door and as I opened he tossed something into the neighbor's yard. I asked him what it was and he said it was a mouse the cat had in it's mouth and the cat had offered it to him.

I told him he should not have thrown it into the neighbor's yard; there is a dog there and my cat hates that dog.
He regularly taunted that dog in various ways.

My friend entered the house and we began our visit.
we were drinking ice tea and talking about all manner of subjects.
My friend was dressed in a nice blue shirt and white pants.
he would place his glass of ice tea on the arm of the chair while he talked. He had some Italian blood and talked with his hands quite a bit.

My cat comes in from the kitchen where he had been nibbling on some dry food and drinking water (I could hear him from the other room).
The cat walks in the living room looks at me, as if to warn me then jumps up in my friend's lap.

My friend in his overconfidence remarked "your cat is not mad at me anymore" I didn't say anything but continued with what we were discussing. I saw that look in my cat's eyes he sat up while my friend was talking and got on the arm of the chair and deliberately kicked the nearly full glass of ice tea in my friend's lap and then calmly stocked off.

My friend wasn't happy, I told him he shouldn't have thrown the mouse in the neighbor's yard. He looked a little confused when I repeated that statement to him and I went on to tell him that cats hold grudges sometimes for years at a time.
