Default Hams wanted for hazardous journey to KL7 NA-233

Hams wanted for hazardous journey. Bitter cold, strong winds and long hours of rain. Safe return doubtful. Possibly honor and recognition in event of success.
Idea from -----Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton's----- AD.

Seriosly, Looking for DXpedition members to Ogliuga Island, located about 80 miles West from Adak, Alaska. Have a quote from 100ft charter vessel, up to 8 people can be taken on board.
Estimated dates: 2nd part of July- 1st week of August 2009.
    New one IOTA NA-233.

Yes, it would be nice to have some idea in advance of what expenses the ops are expected to pick up for themselves as opposed to what is being covered by the sponsors, and what equipment and supplies (if any) is/are being provided. If it's going to cost me $3k to participate, that's significantly out of my budget; OTOH, if food, lodging, travel and gear are provided, and all that's wanted are good ops with Extra-class licenses and plenty of "git -r- dun" to handle problems with the tools and supplies at hand in creative ways, then you can sign me up now. I expect the reality is somewhere in the middle, but it would be nice to get a bit of a feel for where things stand with this one...

    Hi,

Thanks everyone for interest, phone calls and emails!
    Equipment:
As it stands now, Icom may loan us IC756PROIII qty 2 when plans finalized.
    What we have equipment-wise:
    IC7000 as 3rd or b/up radio.
Heil Proset x2 CW keys x2, band filters 20/40, misc hardware.
    Amplifiers: ALS600S qty 2, EU2000i generators qty 2
Antennas: Spiderbeam 10/15/20 4/3/3 EL, TW2010 TW4040 verticals, 40ft military type push up mast.
What is missing: operating position(s) tent Cabela's type and stove. Both items broken during last DXpedition to Cleveland volcano, NA-234.

Financial part: Tickets Seattle-Adak Alaska Airlines r/trip ~$1650 now or 25000 miles! (NWA/DELTA/ALASKA/SKY MILES etc).
Charter boat $6000/day. 1-2 days one way depending on weather. So $12-24k total exposure for charter.
All equipment must be flown in to Adak, abt $1.79/lb from Seattle Alaska Air Cargo. 1000 lbs was equipment/food weight last time, it may be touch more this time (heavier tent + extra generator and amp) ~1200-1300lbs

Stay in Adak, estimate at $200/day 4-5 days. Little fact about Adak: milk $14/galon.

$5-8k/person is estimated range of expenses depending on qty of people going.

If nearby volcano erupted, air travel may be cut off for unknown amount of time. This is a major risk.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I will stay home and put the money into a bigger antenna coil for my crystal radio.

    Thumbs down

I think I will have to pass. I got a lot of guts but the valcano is the end of the line for me.... Who ever is doing that I would surely give them a pat on the back for that one. Good luck and we will see you in heaven, because it does not sound like anyone will make it back...

I am no coward, but even the bravest of men balk. It takes a complete idiot to go through with that "journey." Maybe if I re-incarnate as a walrus or a polar bear, I would go through with this. For now I'll definently pass.
Good luck and God's speed young padouwan. May the force be with you.

I am no coward but even the bravest men balk. It takes a complete dummy to be waltzing around in sub-zero temperatures like that. Would'nt the radios freeze up? If I was a walrus or a polar bear I might take this "Journey" it's your hide not mine. Good luck and God's speed young padouwan, may the force be with you before you all become popsicles.
