HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A spokesperson for Genworth Financial says the layoffs that started Thursday are the result of a painstaking effort to streamline business in response to the current economic environment.

The Henrico-based insurance and investment firm announced last month that it would cut 14 percent of its global workforce.

Thursday, 1,000 employees were let go companywide - 390 of them in Richmond. The next hardest-hit area was Lynchburg, with 230 employees laid off.
