Yahoo is now using "Web Beacons" to track every Yahoo Group user.

If you belong to ANY Yahoo Groups - be aware that Yahoo is now using
"Web Beacons" to track every Yahoo Group user. It's similar to
cookies, but allows Yahoo to record every website and every group you
visit, even when you're not connected to Yahoo. Look at their updated
privacy statement at:

http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/details.html

About 2/3 down the page, in the section on *cookies*, you will
see a link that says *WEB BEACONS*.

Click on the phrase "Web Beacons." On the page that opens, on the
left side of the screen, find a box entitled "Opt-Out."

In that section find "opt-out of interest-matched advertising" link
that will let you "opt-out" of their snooping. Click it and then click
the opt-out button on the next page.

Note that Yahoo's invasion of your privacy - and your ability to opt-
out of it - is not user-specific. It is MACHINE specific. That means
you will have to opt-out on every computer (and browser) that you use.

Additional note: You may have opt-out of cookies, but still be in for "web Beacons unless you follow this procedure.

You may use this and forward it to other groups or users.

Note: This opt-out applies to a specific browser rather than a specific user. Therefore you will have to opt-out separately from each computer or browser that you use.

The opt-out is stored on a cookie in your computer. If you clear cookies from time-to-time, you may have to reset the opt-out. Depends on how you clear the cookies.

I regularly use Window Washer on my computer; although it cleans out cookies, exceptions can be stored. I checked the opt-out page again after using Window Washer, and found that my opt-out was not affected. Apparently the exception that I set preserved that cookie.

I also have the option to clear cookies whenever I close my Mozilla Firefox browser. After clearing cookies that way, I found that my Yahoo opt-out had to be reset. Does anyone know how to set an exception into Firefox cookie clearing?

A lot of places do that. You agree to allow them to monitor your usage to get past their sign up process and then disable it. Oh wait, that would be violating the EULA on a lot of products and services. That would be almost as bad as removing the tag from a mattress.
