    Eugene Harlan EUGENE G. HARLAN, 64 ROCKFORD - Eugene G. Harlan, 64, of
    Rockford died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, in his home, surrounded by his
    loving family, after a courageous battle with ALS. Born Nov. 10, 1944, in
    Waverly, Iowa, the son of George and Mary (Aden) Harlan. Married Sharon
    Bennett on Nov. 21, 1964, in Waterloo, Iowa. Employed as a electronic
    engineer by Arachnid, Inc. for 24 years. Member of Riverside Community
    Church and the Choir Church Council. Also a member of Rockford Amateur Radio
    Association, Amateur Radio Emergency Services, American Radio Relay League,
    Ham Radio Operator, call sign WB9MMM, Kishwaukee Valley Community Band,
    Rockford Wind Ensemble, Rockford Concert Band and Dixie Blue Notes.
    Volunteered for several years with On The Waterfront festival. Eugene was
    instrumental in having Christian Life School Talk with the International
    Space Station via Ham Radio and published Amateur Television Quarterly
    Magazine. Graduated from West High School in Waterloo, Iowa, Brooks
    Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Calif., School of Modern
    Photography in New Jersey and Rock Valley College. Survived by loving wife,
    Sharon of Rockford; son, Shawn (Sara) Harlan of Machesney Park; daughter,
    Wendy Helmer of Rockford; grandchildren, Dustin Helmer, Jessica, Cassidy and
    Riley Harlan; brother, Maurice (Natacha) Harlan of Spartanburg, S.C.;
    sister, Joyce (Russell) Kohel of College Station, Texas; and several nieces
    and nephews. Memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, in Riverside
    Community Church, Machesney Park, with visitation from 9 a.m. to time of
    service; Dr. William R. Kerr, pastor of Riverside Community Church, will
    officiate. Cremation rites to be accorded. Memorials to Riverside Community
    Church. Arrangements by Anderson-Long-Klontz Funeral Home and Cremation
    Service Ltd., 6825 Weaver Road, Rockford, IL 61114, 815-654-2255.
