    Unhappy

    Greetings,
    I own a Yaesu FT-897D.
After reading the manual a few times, and checking websites, I found out how to check the SWR.

But the SWR reading is given in bars that run across the bottom of the LED.
Although the bars seem to move during the checking of the SWR, I really don't know how to measure the SWR by how many bars light up.

I think it might be time for a "real" metered SWR tester.

Any thoughts on this SWR checking with the 897D?

    Thanks,

I've just finished researching this as well.

You can go with an external meter such as the LDG FT-Meter.

As for the SWR bar scale, I found these details on the Yahoo group for the 897. You can also check their file section for a spreadsheet with info on the SWR readings.

0 hash marks - 1:1 (perfect match - flat SWR)
    1 hash marks - 1.15:1
    2 hash marks - 1.33:1
3 hash marks - 1.55:1 (power starts to fold back here)
    4 hash marks - 1.8:1
    5 hash marks - 2.11:1
    6 hash marks - 2.5:1
7 hash marks - 3:1 (here the high SWR "HSWR" starts to flash)

for 49$ I think I'd spend 15 of it buying a few pieces parts building http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=13511
and keep the other 34 for my mad science fund
