Anyone see anything wrong with that? #That statement was transmitted on 14.275 of all places, #and when I attempted (nicely) to explain why it made no sense, he suddenly lost my signal. #Uh, he was s9, #and I had 3 elements pointed at him (NM) at a KW... or maybe this

CONTACT..........or #CQ CQ insert callsign QRZ.....

    etc. etc.

My favorite of late is how many new operators to HF just come on a frequency and make a call, the phrase "Is the frequency in use" must be outlawed or something.

Why is this sort of thing happening? #I can only assume they have received absolutely NO ELMERING from anyone. #Including from the VE's that gave them the test.

Come on folks, don't throw these poor guys into the water like so much chum to a shark frenzy. #At least teach them basic ham radio survival techniques.

...sounds like there is a lack of elmering going on.

You old folks neeed to get to work teaching those new fangled whippersnappers something about what you know and have known for years.

    SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE

BE NICE TO THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

--remember that " long long ago " you were a newbie on the radio, and others slowly taught YOU how to act, what TO do and what NOT to do...so share your knowledge with others.

    Git 'er done !!
    God loves you .

Be as nice as you can to others.

I type real slow for those of you who can not read fast.

Well it's quite simple why they ask "is this frequency in use". It's in the test they took to get a license. Now, we all know what is in the test and what goes on in real life are two different things. They don't know this yet. They actually believe everyone practices the way the books tell them too. Of course, I didn't do to well with that question either because I'm in the Army Signal Corps. Been there for about 13 years now. We've always been taught to LISTEN for a few minutes before even keying. Then ask if the frequency is in use.

Give them time. After a few weeks of listening around they'll catch on. No one really needs to teach them anything. If all the elmers just operate how they wish everyone will operate they will come to.

    Just my few cents worth........

Was it during a Contest? The League suspends all rules of ettiquette during them!
Worse yet is "ZisfreqinuseZisfreqin use? CQCQCQ.
They really don't want to know, they just want a freq!

I don't believe you understood what I said. I meant they are NOT going "is this frequency in use". Just keying down and yapping.

I spent some time in the Army Signal Corps too, I don't remember ever saying "is the frequency in use". Explain please.

Nope, wasn't during a contest. Happens all the time these days.

There are no rules pertaining to what we are discussing, just good manners.

Well, there are FCC rules, and there are self imposed "politeness rules", which is something a lot of hams don't quite have figured out.
"Just because you can" doesn't mean "you should".
Politness means you should ask first and listen before transmitting. Not doing so may result in getting your callsign changed to L1D amongst many of us.
Is it mandatory? NO. Is it the acceptable way to proceed? Guess that depends on yoiur upbringing, kind of like saying "Please" and "Thank you".
Part of Ham Radio is learning to be polite and considerate. The Woufhong and Rettysnitch are reserved for those who lack manners.
So I guess we agree, Dan. I was trying to use "rules" in the context of societal norms, good behavior, and such.

    EXCUSE ME ??
The VE's giving the test are supposed/required to elmer them ??

    I don't think so.

If THEY ask a question, or a hundred questions, they will be given the proper answer (s), BUT in MOST instances, THEY cannot wait to get out the door.

We will stay for whatever time is necessary to help anyone, but to ASSUME they want or need our assistance is silly.

It seems to me he was acting in the appropriate manner considering the frequency.
I have found the only people who hang out there are either clueless or looking for trouble.
    I guess the right answer would have been;
"Yes d@mmit! This frequency is always effing in use!" (then play favorite sound effect)
