Any suggestions for a good packet set-up. I have 2 computers, but neither one have a serial port so I am looking for a usb tnc that will be easy to set up mostly with a ht. Also whats the best software to use? Thanks Greg

Anyone use the "Packet Radio USB micro TNC Plus" Looks nice but I don't see where the receive side plugs in to the unit....

It has a 10 pin modular (similar to an RJ-45) connector.

I have one but I am having some difficulty. The drivers crashed my PC so I uninstalled it.

Must be using a laptop; at least most desktops have ONE RS-232C port left. (You can thank Micerosoft at least in part for that.)

I'd suggest that at this point, there are apparently software packages that allow TNC emulation for AX.25 Packet, so a hardware isn't required, but you will still need a USB to RS-232C adapter.
Some of the avid (rabid?) packeteers should be able to make specific recommendations; I believe N5PVL has a lot of packet experience. Just don't run out and buy a TNC until you determine if you actually need the hardware,or can get by with software alone. (The software approach WILL be less $ and require less wiring, particularly if you are, or will be, using other data modes using the sound card.)

BTW, "serial port" is a generic term, which INCLUDES USB. But there IS a big difference between USB and (traditional) RS-232C, and they are NOT directly interchangeable. So when researching computer peripherals or software, be sure the type of serial port is specified.

Yeah using a laptop.. Some additional information. I am using a Icom - IC-2000 (doesn't have a data port), but I was told they make adapters to hook the tx up the mic jack. I just installed AGW and it decodes 144.390 well so maybe I will be able to get by without buying anything other than a cable if I can't find one..

You can either use a TNC, or you can buy/build a simple interface for a soundcard. You will still need a USB/Serial adapter.

It sounds like you've got the basics if you have AGWTerm running. I like the little/cheap Buxcom RASCAL interface. Save yourself some hassle and order it with the right cables for your rig.

I don't know how much packet activity you're going to find in your area outside of APRS on 144.390. The UI-View program will run with the AGW Packet Engine (AGWPE) that you've probably already got installed. UI-View will talk APRS to local users on 2 meters, and will also let you communicate via the APRS network with APRS'ers worldwide. APRS is much more than just position and weather reporting. It also supports electronic messaging.
There are APRS/Internet gateways all over the place, and you can track an APRS station using the findu and aprsworld websites, as well as with UI-View.

Not much is going on with packet these days, it pretty much died thanks to the rise of the internet. If you want to play with HF digital, try PSK31 and RTTY.
