This is a two - part question.

What HF rigs have the quietest receivers ?

What HF rigs have the noisiest receivers ?

I am talking about the basic transceiver ; no attenuators, or pre - amps on / off...just the basic radio

I would prefer if you spoke only of rigs that you have owned, and used in many conditions over a period of time --- not just used at a friends home / contest / field day / etc.

Please give brand name & model number and how noisy / quiet the receiver was for your personal situations ( am / fm / ssb / cw / etc )...on HF bands only.

    Thanks

The most quiet tranceiver I had was a Yeasu FT-920.
i'm sorry you don't have the experience or understanding to realize that others possess a skill set that you seem to dismiss as fantastical.

i always thought my IC-746 had a fairly quiet receiver. But I just acquired a new IC-7000, and there is no comparison. The 7000 is extremely quiet. Even without noise reduction dialed in, it does a great job. I never noticed how many intermodulation products I was hearing on the 746.

As far as the noisiest, you'd have to go way back. The Eico 753 was pretty noisy, but that was a selectivity issue. The original FT-101 was very sensitive to front end overload.

The worst in terms of cross-modulation hash was the IC-725.

Quietest, kenwood TS-520s and a TenTec 545. Wish I never got rid of those.

Noisiest, Icom IC-706MKII and Ic-746 pro. Have both of them now. Very seldom use the 706.

    Quietest is my TS-830... a $250 e-bay special, noisiest, the IC 746PRO a $1500 POS.

A TS-850SAT is my daily user though.

Quietest> FT-817ND by Yaesu, superb sensitivity and a pleasure to listen to, and very close second is my Kenwood TS-520S. I still own both these radios.

Noisiest, by far> IC-718 by Icom. Overall a good value, but the RX was so tiresome to listen to, I sold it and don't miss it at all. cheers scott.

Noisest was my Ranger on freeband. Quietest was my FT101 converted for freeband. One night I was in QSO with "That One and Only Double D" and "Worldwide 401" broke in and the Ranger just swamped. It had noise whenever anyone would drive by the house trailer in a pickup pulling a boat. I could never cut my grass or weedwack for fear it might hurt my rig.

Anyway, I got the 101 and when the skip was running again, I was able to hear a station in England, Europe and QSO with him on 28.050. He called himself "Picadilly Billy". I also heard Tokyo Japan and Paris France and got through "Handlebar's" 10KW signal to snag the contacts.

    That FT101 was sweeeet!
