It has been repeatedly pointed out that amateur radio is now officially dead, at the hands of an FCC that simply doesn't care to maintain the testing requirements that have always kept bad operators out.

There's no point in continuing to argue about it - the folks who took the code tests and passed them have correctly pointed out that they are the people who built ham radio into what it is, and they have declared the service to be dead.

There can be no higher authority than those who have created/nurtured/built the hobby. That breeze you feel of late is the result of SKs becoming whirling dervishes in their graves.

Let us no longer argue, bitch and moan or whatever, but let us take a moment to reflect upon what was once a great hobby, and in tribute, turn off the power to our rigs. Permanently. Run the power cords through the shredder, and place the rigs at the curb for collection on the next garbage day.

Because it can be no other way on this sad occasion.

You're kidding right? If you run power cords through the shredder it could damage the shredder.
i'm sorry you don't have the experience or understanding to realize that others possess a skill set that you seem to dismiss as fantastical.

You need to change your sig... it won't be March. It'll be (probably) February.

I'm currently preparing a petition for rulemaking to eliminate the Amateur service completely, taking part 97 out of the FCC's rules entirely.

Would you be willing to sign on as a supporter of the petition?

man, I think your are totally wrong in what you posted.
if anything is dead, it must be your thinking.

you will only get out of it what you put into it.

and by your post, you have no intention of doing anything to improve things or even to help out some of the new hams to enjoy ham radio.

I can only offer to teach, but I cannot make you learn.

Is that like "you can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think"??

The truth is, *my* attitude is that Amateur Radio will continue to grow and flourish, making use of new technologies that nobody's even thought of yet. Can someone come up with a way to do high bitrate digital within a very narrow bandwidth? With redundancy/robustness built into the protocol so that voice sounds as if the other station were actually standing in the room with you?

Those are the kinds of things I think we should see eventually... and I think hams will be among those who make it happen... HDTV with 19.2 megabits/second? I betcha hams could do it in way less than that...

But I keep seeing all these folks who had to take a code test declaring that ham radio's dead, so I'd like to see how many really believe that.

Now, I also realize that this is QRZ, and it's really a vanishingly small sample size... so small that it's statistically irrelevant. But it's fun to jerk on the chains, just to see who really, honestly believes this sky is falling attitude and is willing to go to the mat on it.

Personally, I appreciate those of you who've been around a long time who're willing to teach. I don't know, really, the best way to call CQ and get responses, among other things. I listen, I hear things. But that's nothing like asking direct questions and getting honest answers.

There are those I'll ask that I trust won't give a flip what my license status was/is, and they'll answer. I believe most hams are that way... they don't care about license class. Out here on the 'net, there are definitely wackos, and that's true of any area of the 'net, regardless of the subject matter at hand.

I didn't say I needed it... I asked if you were willing to back up your rhetoric with action... and you answered me... you're just here to bitch and moan.

Thank you for at least being honest enough to do that.
