Anyone HAM Radio Operator licensed can use this new technology!
As I have figured, D-Star has grown from a few radios to hundreds across the continental United States of America and abroad. I have had great pleasure using D-Star and communicating with makeshift repeaters along with fello D-Star users. D-Star has been planted on the 2nd tallest tower in the United States and many D-Star events have occurred among the past few months. D-Star is connecting new and experienced amateurs together with the power of the World Wide Web! Experience D-Star yourself by clicking on the link above which gives *qrz revenue or by clicking the ad with the D-Star radio on the top of circulating ads.
*The link above was directly copied from the circulating ad page at the top. If it fails to do it's job for QRZ. Please let me know by PM.
edit: some people have decided to bring other 'modes' into this topic which I am ok with but feel that this disclaimer is necessary for your safety!
WARNING: 802.11 AND P25 CONTAINS ENCRYPTION CAPABILITIES THAT COULD COST YOU YOUR FCC GRANTED HAM RADIO LICENSE. TAKE CAUSION WHILE EXPERIMENTING WITH THESE MODES. D-Star ON THE OTHER HAND HAS BEEN GIVEN THE OK BY THE FCC AND HAS BEEN MADE EXPECIALLY FOR HAM RADIO OPERATORS WITH ADDED FEATURES SUCH AS AUTOMATICALLY BROADCASTING YOUR HAM CALLSIGN FOR YOU.

To bad the "high speed" data side is a bit of a letdown, only 128K simplex is a bit low for the pricetag that comes with ID1, plain old ax.25 does better then that at a fraction of the price.
still the digital voice functions and overall system design is a nice thing to play with.
ps. I think that D-Star as designed by JARL does alow for higher speeds and full duplex, there is just nothing for it in the market.

OH boy, another sales pitch from a lonesome DSTAR buyer.
"Tell my friends I'm having a great time in basic training, Ma!"
I guess that once you've been suckered, the only way to keep any dignity to to try to sucker in a few of your peers so that you'll have company, and won't be the only one.

Good point. This is a function of bandwidth. I believe it has a 25kHz frequency bandwidth to get 128K data bandwidth. My memory could be wrong.

It's 150 KHz gmsk for 128K the same index as for g3ruh fsk modulation used for ax25 at 9k6 and higher, highest speed without homebuilding is currently 307k2 with a bandwith of about 375KHz, with homebuilding the top speed is 11Mbs using bpsk modulation with a bandwith of 11MHz
BTW. I just checked the D-Star specs and it seems I was wrong in my first post, the speed of highspeed data is fixed at 128k, you could go faster and use the d star protocoll but it would not be d star

The 10 GHz. backbone system for DSTAR, which I have not heard of being used in North America yet - though I believe the hardware has been available - uses Asynchronous Transfer Mode technology - supposedly ideal for mixed, multimedia traffic at something close to T1 speeds.
I think for most current amateur applications, 128K is more than adequate for mixed data and voice communications.
DSTAR won't really advance the leading edge of technology, but if it is successful, it will surely inspire something better eventually. It would be great to see a technology competition between ICOM and some other vendor(s).
