    Good idea!

I remember listening the night they changed over. It was, of course, seamless.

We had talked about a DC/Maryland station exactly as you described. WW3WWV is available! If you or anyone else is the least bit interested, it would be fun to look into. We've already got our hands full here in Colorado, so it would take a few intrepid DC-area folks to make it happen.

Apparently the original NBS building site on Connecticut Ave. is now a park. Think you might raise a few eyebrows by setting up antennas there? The Chinese embassy is across the street!

We have also heard suggestions of a Kauai Station. KH6WWV is also available! Hawaii, anyone? :)

While WW3WWV might be available, it's in the "Vanity Call Sign" pool. Special event call signs are a 1x1 call such as K1T or W8D - valid for up to 2 weeks. Any ham can apply for one easily, and not in any way affect their normal call sign.

Anyone wanting to do a special event using WW3WWV would have to relinquish their normal/assigned call and apply for the vanity call, which would then become their normal call sign.

Probably not a lot of folks wanting to do that I can't imagine

But you could try for W3V - not a bad alternative

Yeah, Look at what they did to Loran....A good backup to GPS when either your GPS system goes down or there is a Denial Of Service (DOS) thru jamming or just plain crappy receiver conditions....100 KHz is hard to jam....not quite as accurate, but something is better than nuthin...supposedly cost $35 million to operate each year, then when shut down (Feb 2008, I think) gov. spent over $500 million tearing down just a few stations...and we have basically no PNT backup for now; hope they bring it back. Would be a real shame to lose WWV....been using it for years...

Nobody needs to relinquish a call sign. Instead just apply for a Club license(s), using the desired call sign(s) that are still available. This is the way the WWØWWV station is licensed, by WØDAS, who obviously knows this. ;)

A primary difference between a Club and a Vanity application is on the former TWO signatures are needed, one from the club trustee and one from another "responsible club official".

There's a wee bit more to it than that. I'm trustee of a club. It's FOUR not TWO.

hardly something a person should do for the sake of a "special event station" and really against the intent of a "club station"

FCC rules 97.5(b)(2) and 97.17(d) -- Club Documentation-

FCC rule 97.5(b)(2) A club station license.
A club station license is granted only to the person who is the license trustee designated by an officer of the club. The trustee must be a person who holds an operator/primary station license grant. The club must be composed of at least four persons and must have a name, a document of organization, management, and a primary purpose devoted to amateur service activities consistent with this part.

According to FCC rules to be granted a club station license, a club should have a document of organization (minutes, bylaws, charter, etc.), a list of current officers (management), a list of members (at least four persons) and a license trustee designated by an officer of the club. An amateur can only be the trustee of one valid club station.
The club station can have multiple call signs assigned to it under one trustee but only one of the assigned call signs can be a vanity. A Club station may not hold more than one valid vanity call sign.

As long as the all the club station licenses display the same club name and use the same FRN number and same trustee, the FCC views them as one club station with multiple call signs.
Additional information: Never associate a personal FRN (Federal Registration Number) to a club station license. An individual’s social security number and personal information are attached to their FRN. The club must apply for its own FRN number as a separate entity.

FCC rule 97.17(d) Application for new license grant.
For a new club or military recreation station license grant:
One unique call sign will be shown on the license grant of each new primary, club and military recreation station. The call sign will be selected by the sequential call sign system. Effective February 14, 2011, no club station license grants will be issued to a licensee who is shown as the license trustee on an existing club station license grant.

Inform the ARRL the info on their web site (link previously cited) which says only TWO signatures is incorrect. The rest is no big deal.

If there are more enthusiastic WWV supporters local to other related QTH's that want to form Clubs as WØDAS has done in CO there isn't any contradiction of intent. There could be a WWV Legacy Club, a WWVH Club, etc.

This first event could be used as a kickoff for a continued commemorative NIST radio broadcast support campaign.

eLORAN is on the table as an alternative for critical areas that are susceptible to jamming. It will use the same frequencies as LORAN C, which makes tearing down the old towers and stations a fiscal crime if eLORAN is implemented. Range is the same...800 miles, but it has better resolution. Of course it won't help in hostile areas where we can't site two antennas.

For our military, self-contained inertial navigation systems are becoming much more accurate, and there is promise for insanely accurate inertial systems in the future.
