    William S. Shipp, 72, of Suffield, husband of Jane (Cook) Shipp, died on Wednesday, (September 07, 2011), at Hartford Hospital.
    Born on July 11, 1939 in Little Rock, AR, he was the son of the late William F. and Mary Lee (Finley) Shipp. Bill grew up in Little Rock, where he was an Eagle Scout and a Sea Scout.
    He was a graduate of Little Rock Central High School, Class of 1957, and went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1965. Bill did his postdoctoral work at the University of Cologne and at the Max Planck Institut für Biologie in Tübingen, both in Germany.
    From 1967 until his retirement in 1990, Bill was Professor of Medical Science at Brown University in Providence, RI. While at Brown he taught microbiology and biochemistry, and later was appointed Associate Provost for Computing. Under Bill's leadership Brown installed one of the first broadband data networks in the country. His last post at Brown was as Director of the Institute for Research in Information and Scholarship, where he did early work on the use of computers in education.

    He was an avid amateur radio operator (call sign KC1AG) and in 1989 led the Walvis Bay DXPedition to what is now Namibia. He was a member of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital Amateur Radio Club and the American Radio Relay League.
    In his later years Bill enjoyed woodworking and boatbuilding, and was a graduate of the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, ME.

    Along with his wife Jane of almost 50 years, Bill leaves his son, Brad Shipp of Providence, RI; brothers-in-law John R. Cook and his wife Linda of Palm Desert, CA, and C. Orson Cook and his wife Elsie of Houston, TX; a niece, Sandra Boultinghouse and her husband Michael, and a nephew Steve Ratcliffe and his wife Betty, all of Little Rock, AR; and two honorary granddaughters, Cecelia and Veronica Partain of Suffield. He was predeceased by his sister, Bette Shipp Williams.


    Services will be private.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wooden Boat Fund at Renbrook School in West Hartford.
