    Merle Peterson

    Merle B. Peterson, a long-time resident of the Colville and Kettle Falls areas passed away on May 12 in Colville at the age of 87. He was born on March 23, 1918 in Gilroy, CA, the son of Chris and Luama (Bell) Peterson.

    Merle moved with his family to Denair, CA and then to Aromas, Ca in the 1920's. He became interested in bee keeping while in grammar school, a hobby that he continued through his schooling. He graduated from high school in 1936 in San Jose, CA, where he had been introduced to the world of radio broadcasting. He worked as a radio commentator for radio stations in Visalia, Merced and San Francisco until World War II broke out.

    Merle entered the Navy and served as a Naval Intelligence Officer during the war, working first at bases in the San Francisco area and later as the radio operator on an aircraft carrier. He also served with Admiral Nimitz on the island of Guam, broadcasting news of the war in the Pacific back to the citizens of the U.S.

    Following Navy service, he continued in his radio career, working at stations in Hollywood and Reno. He built and operated KCVL, the Colville radio station for a number of years until he was offered a job with the Voice of America in Washington, D.C.

    He retired in 1979 from the Voice of America and returned to the Colville area. Merle has been a ham radio operator for most of his life.

    Merle is survived by his wife, Janet Peterson, at the home in Kettle Falls; one daughter, Ellen Thornton and husband, John, Lake City, CA; three sons, Mitch Peterson and wife, Wendy, Sebastopol, CA; Doug Peterson and wife, Peggy, Granite Bay, CA; Eric Peterson and wife Terri, Healdsburg, CA; one sister, Eunice Oldham and Husband, Bob, Monte Soreno, CA; a sister-in-law, Judy Peterson, Campbell, CA; his step-sons, Jan Clark and wife, Linda, Portland, Russell Clark and wife, Marie, Bakersfield, CA; his step-daughters, Melanie Groven and husband, Paul, Puyallup, Lorelle Green and husband, Bob, Marshall; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

    A memorial service is planned at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 19, at the Kettle Falls Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor LeRoy Holmes officiating.

    Memorials may be made to the Kettle Falls Seventh Day Adventist Church Memorial Fund.

    The Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
