Recorded live from Tokyo Hamfair 8/31/2019 during Ham College episode 56. Ray Novak, N9JA shows us what's been going on with new product development at Icom.

There are new product introductions at the Tokyo Ham Fair. What coverage will we see in ARRL publications? Or on the ARRL web page?

If they attended, like they did Dayton and EU Ham Radio, I'm sure there will be some mention of new things that are coming to the US.

There will be coverage just as there was of the new products shown at Dayton. Do you read QST?

Interesting. Icom jumps into the market served by Elecraft, Xiegu, etc. with a QRP transceiver "brick" that looks VERY similar to theirs. Is it released, or just announced?

"Not going to release as product, just showing capability" ?

If the ICOM 705 is under $500 they will sell as successfully as the ICOM 7300...(Which is a Boat load)!

I have stated in the past, between the SDR and New Digital modes, we are going to see exponentially efficient communications. Today, with JS8, and FT8, we can detect modulated carriers at -24db below the noise floor, and with the SDR's keep getting better in sensitivity, one can only imagine when the sun spot cycle has any life to it...

    C U on the bands..

The new digital modes like FT8 are great at passing signal reports but not much use for passing information like health and welfare info during an emergency. CW still rules the roost.

N5WRX....Yep, CW all the way, but just for your information, JS8CALL, and actually have a QSO, it is nothing more than FT8, using messaging ..

Having said that, you would need a Key board and computer, so CW only radio, and key!

Does anyone even use it? I've had one QSO on JS8. PSK31 is faster and easier to use.

Actually, JS8 and CW are about the same usage, depending upon the day (This is from PSK Reporter)

    FT 8928026
    FT 427011
    JS8 3126
    CW 2087

    PSK 31144
    OPERA 43
    MSK1444 2

This is using FT8, or JS8CALL...They are able to detect at -24dB below the noise floor, while using 50hz of bandwidth...That is the specifications...

    News Flash:

QRP is not a new technology, it is a mature technology. ICOM thinks you are an idiot.
